Enfield: Museums, Architectural History and Nature
Accommodation in Enfield
Enfield combines historic sites with options for those interested in the landscape and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, you can first consider whether museums and architectural history or experiences in nature should shape your stay. These different focuses can also help guide you when looking for a hotel for your trip to Enfield.
History and Architecture
The Enfield Historic District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. It forms a compact, two-mile-long stretch along Enfield Street. Its residences include buildings from a 300-year period, and the architecture encompasses a wide range of styles. The district’s long period of development and varied building styles make it a specific destination for anyone who would like to explore Enfield’s architectural history during a visit.
The Enfield Shakers Historic District offers another historical perspective: It includes a unique group of historic buildings from the period when the Shakers had a strong presence in Enfield. The “Enfield’s African American Legacies” exhibit also explores a distinct chapter of local history. It was first shown on June 15, 2024, at the Juneteenth celebration on Enfield Town Green and later that year was moved to the Old Town Hall Museum of the Enfield Historical Society.
Museums and Planning Your Visit
The Old Town Hall Museum is the flagship museum of the Enfield Historical Society. It is open Sundays from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m., from Memorial Day in May through October; visits at other times are available by appointment. The Old Town Hall’s research collections are also available by appointment. If you are planning a visit, check the current hours and arrange visits outside regular opening hours in advance.
The Martha Parsons House is open by appointment. The Wallop School is open one Sunday per month from June through September, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.; other visiting times may be available by appointment. The opening schedules therefore differ considerably: The Old Town Hall Museum has regular Sunday hours during the stated period, while the Wallop School is open only one Sunday per month. The Enfield Historical Society also holds special activities, open houses and historical programs throughout the year at its museums and other venues. Check the relevant event dates when planning to attend.
Landscape and Activities
Scantic River State Park covers 784 acres and is located in Enfield, East Windsor and Somers. There are several access points along the Scantic River in these three towns. Park activities include birdwatching, fishing, hiking and hunting. The park offers a different focus from the compact Historic District: Here, a variety of outdoor activities take center stage.
Freshwater Pond offers a beautiful view of downtown and a picturesque landscape. Together with the historic sites, it provides a selection of different themes to consider when planning your trip. When setting your visit dates, you can coordinate museum hours with your planned outdoor activities and decide what you would like to focus on during your stay in Enfield.
