New Canaan offers a variety of reasons to visit: history exhibitions, modern architecture programs, nature experiences and tea. To plan your trip, it helps to start by choosing the topics that interest you most. The offerings also vary in format, ranging from exhibitions and tours to a walking trail, a birds of prey exhibition and guided tea tastings.

Culture and Modern Architecture

The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society holds two to four major exhibitions each year. They explore the history of New Canaan and place it in a broader historical context. The Jim Bach Special Collections Museum has three separate exhibition rooms.

Through Modern New Canaan, the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society brings together programs, events and tours that celebrate, appreciate and preserve New Canaan’s modern architecture from the mid-20th century. Architecture is the focus here; the Society’s annual exhibitions turn their attention to history and its broader context. This lets you plan your cultural visits according to whether you are more interested in architecture or historical exhibitions.

Nature Experiences and Tea at Grace Farms

The New Canaan Nature Center spans 40 acres and features an unusual variety of habitats. It also offers an exhibition featuring live birds of prey. The visitor center is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Check opening hours before you arrive.

At Grace Farms, a one-mile trail around Cattail Pond connects ten different habitats. Guided tea tastings and programs about tea traditions and cultures offer another way to experience the site. Grace Farms is free to visit and open to all ages.

Public tours at Grace Farms take place Thursdays from May through December and year-round on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. The two schedules vary by day of the week and season: if you plan to take a tour, check the specific date before your visit. There is also clear guidance for getting there: Grace Farms is accessible via Routes 123 and 124.

Getting Oriented at the Train Station and Planning Your Stay

The visitor center for The Glass House is across from New Canaan train station. The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is within walking distance of the station. You can take these different locations into account when planning visits with the train station as your point of reference.

If you are planning a hotel stay in New Canaan, you can organize your trip around your main interests: history and exhibitions, modern architecture, nature or tea. The specific visitor offerings provide a range of reasons to visit; the tour and opening-hour details can help you plan accordingly.
