Jefferson’s local history brings together railroads, community life, and ranch history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Jefferson, this historical focus may play a role in choosing your destination. Connections include both historic buildings and the landscape around the former Kenosha Pass Railroad Station.

Railroad and Pass History

The Jefferson Denver, South Park & Pacific Railroad Depot dates to around 1880. It is one of the few surviving historic structures from the railroad’s narrow-gauge network. This makes it significant not only for its approximate age, but also as a record of the network’s history.

At the site of the former Kenosha Pass Railroad Station, the focus shifts from the building to the landscape. From there, you can enjoy views of the expansive South Park below the pass. Information panels tell of bison, Indigenous peoples, trappers, and settlers who crossed the pass in search of new opportunities. Here, landscape and historical narratives come together; unlike at the depot, the journeys across the pass are also central to the story.

School and Building History

The Jefferson School was built in 1901 by Jesse Carruthers and William Craig for the children of Jefferson. Since its construction, it has been a center of community activities. Its bell still rings during religious services and community gatherings. Both its original purpose and its continuing role in community life are part of its history.

The Baker/Steiner Barn was built around 1885. It is one of the largest surviving and best-preserved double log hay barns from the 19th century in South Park. Its construction date, building style, and standing in regional comparisons offer different points of reference for understanding the building. Compared with Jefferson School, its construction date points to an earlier building period.

The sequence of dates also provides context: Joseph Crockett founded Highplains Ranch in 1874; the depot and barn date to around 1880 and 1885, respectively, while the school was built in 1901. This places the local landmarks mentioned here in a timeline spanning the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

Ranch Founding and Historic Forms of Travel

Heads Block House in Jefferson still stands today and once served as a hotel and stagecoach station. Together with the railroad depot, it offers a comparison between two historic forms of travel. The building’s former hotel function is part of its history; it should not be confused with a present-day hotel offering. The founding of Highplains Ranch adds another chapter to the town’s history.

A 2021 description of the Heritage Area also mentions a mural at the Jefferson Market. It depicts a historic scene of Engine No. 9 traveling through the valleys of South Park. The image adds a depiction of movement through the landscape to the railroad themes.
