Ouray: Hiking Trails, Waterfalls, and Mining History
Accommodation in Ouray
Ouray combines hiking trails, waterfalls, mining history, and seasonal activities. When looking for a hotel in Ouray, you can first decide which of these aspects of the town you want to shape your stay.
Hiking Trails and Waterfalls
The Ouray Perimeter Trail begins across from the Ouray Visitors’ Center on the east side of US Highway 550. The 5.6-mile route passes four waterfalls and six bridges, offering close-up views of the geology. A hidden troll and a Rocktopus are also part of the route.
The scenic Uncompahgre River Walk Loop is shorter than the Perimeter Trail at two miles. It runs along the Uncompahgre River and offers views of Gold Hill, historic mining structures, and seasonal waterfalls. The lengths of the two trails give you a concrete comparison without specifying a walking time.
Box Cañon Falls is a 285-foot waterfall that plunges into a narrow quartzite gorge. At Box Cañon Falls Park, an easy 500-foot trail leads to the falls; the park also provides access to a high bridge, the Perimeter Trail, and a nature center. Box Cañon is also recognized by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area.
The trail to Upper Cascade Falls continues beyond the waterfalls to the Chief Ouray Mine at an elevation of about 10,000 feet. Trail conditions can change due to weather, maintenance, or natural events.
Mining History and Local Heritage
The Ouray Historic District preserves its historic character from 1886 to 1915. It is a good example of late 19th-century architecture and recalls the mining history of the San Juans. The Ouray County Historical Society & Museum shares local heritage through archives, exhibits, programs, and events.
Highgraders Holiday also connects Ouray with its mining history: the annual hard-rock mining competition takes place every August. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the relevant year.
Ice Climbing, Via Ferrata, and Hot Springs
The Ouray Ice Park is a free public ice-climbing park. More than 150 named ice and mixed routes extend across nearly two miles of the Uncompahgre Gorge. Operations are seasonal and depend on conditions. When conditions permit, options include climbing independently as well as guided instruction and clinics.
The Ouray Via Ferrata crosses the rock walls of the Uncompahgre Gorge using fixed cables, ladders, and iron rungs. Check route conditions and safety requirements before using it.
The Ouray Hot Springs Pool is open year-round. Naturally heated mineral water supplies several pools, adults-only areas, lap lanes, a water slide, and an activity pool. The water comes mainly from Box Canyon. At a flow rate of 100 GPM, 150-degree mineral water reaches the pool over more than a mile using gravity alone. Operating details can change; check the latest information before your visit.
Seasonal Activities
In winter, Vinegar Hill offers sledding right in town. Ouray’s free outdoor ice rink offers ice skating and hockey; free skates are available in the shed. Lee’s Ski Hill offers a free tow rope and small, family-friendly ski runs. Since there is no equipment rental on site, you’ll need to bring your own gear. All three winter offerings are weather-dependent; check each one’s current opening status before your visit.
