Discover Mineral County on foot, on a historic drive, or by the water. Hiking trails lead into the Weminuche Wilderness and to the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail; the Bachelor Loop combines a drive with mining history. Activities on the water are also available on the Rio Grande. Public lands make up 96 percent of Mineral County and provide access to Forest Service trails. This lets you include different sides of the destination in your plans without reducing hiking, culture, and river experiences to a single itinerary.

Hiking and Trails in Mineral County

The Continental Divide Trail runs through Mineral County. At River Hill, the Squaw Creek and Weminuche Creek trailheads lead into the Weminuche Wilderness and connect with the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail. The East Bellows Trail provides hiking and horseback riding access to the Wheeler Geologic Area. For a hike with a view, take the 3.5-mile trail to Inspiration Point; from there, you can see Creede, the historic mining district, the surrounding mountains, and the Rio Grande River.

There’s also a way to work some activity into your stay near Creede: a trail built by Mineral County runs south from the baseball field and offers opportunities for biking, hiking, and jogging. The trails listed here differ in where they lead and what activities they offer. For planning, it’s helpful to decide on your preferred focus first: wilderness and a long-distance trail, access to the Wheeler Geologic Area, a scenic viewpoint, or a shorter local activity.

Mining History on the Road and in the Museum

The Bachelor Loop Historic Tour is a 17-mile self-guided drive through the historic mining district above Creede. It passes mine sites from the 1890s and abandoned ghost towns. The eastern route is intended for four-wheel-drive vehicles. The entire Bachelor Loop can also be ridden by bicycle.

The Underground Mining Museum offers a self-guided walking tour that takes about 30 minutes, with an MP3 audio guide. In summer, guided tours are also offered, explaining mining equipment and methods; check the schedule before your trip. The Bachelor-Commodore Mine Complex offers another historical perspective. Its significance is linked to a mining industry that helped foster the settlement of Creede and Mineral County.

In Creede’s seven-block downtown area, historic buildings and names mark the former silver-mining era. The Creede Historical Museum collections include pioneer household items, gaming and gambling equipment, photographs, newspapers, and other local artifacts. Together, the visible reminders along the streets and the objects that tell the story of local history complement each other in town.

Theater and Music in Creede

The Creede Repertory Theatre was founded in 1966. From May to September, it produces four plays in rotating repertory and also hosts music events and concerts. Since the program is seasonal, check the current season before your trip. The Headwaters Music Festival is a separate musical event: it takes place every August in Creede and brings a lineup of bands to town over the weekend. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, confirm the specific festival dates in advance.

The Rio Grande: Boating, Rafting, and Kayaking

Creede and Mineral County lie on the upper Rio Grande or border its headwaters. At the Rio Grande Reservoir Boating Site, there is a basic boat ramp and an access road to the reservoir. Motorboats are allowed on the reservoir; fish are stocked there during the summer months. Check current regulations before boating or fishing. At Marshall Park Campground on the Rio Grande, you can fish for trout and go boating, while also experiencing the area’s diverse wildlife.

Rafting and kayaking opportunities on the Rio Grande range from Class II to Class IV. Mountain Man runs pool-drop whitewater rafting trips near Creede; tours may vary by season. These opportunities differ both in activity and in the stated rapid class. If a guided trip is part of your plans, check which dates are available during your travel period.
