Larimer: Rock Formations, Rivers, and Trails

Horsetooth Rock is a distinctive landmark visible from the plains. Another geological feature is Devil's Backbone: this formation, known as a hogback, consists of tilted layers of sedimentary rock. The two names represent different aspects of the landscape—a widely recognizable rock and a striking rock formation.

Trails, Forest, and Winter

At Lory State Park, more than 28 miles of trails wind through forests, meadows, and rock formations. The landscape shifts along the trails between wooded and open sections, as well as rocky terrain. The park also provides access to six coves at Horsetooth Reservoir for fishing: Quarry, Orchard, North Eltuck, South Eltuck, Soldier, and Satanka.

The season can also shape your choice of activities. In winter, several trails at Lory State Park offer opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. Fossil Creek Reservoir Natural Area, by contrast, has three specifically named trails: Heron Loop, Sandpiper Trail, and Cattail Flats Trail. Hiking is the only activity permitted there. This clear restriction helps visitors choose trails based on their preferred activity.

Fossil Creek Reservoir Natural Area is designated an Important Bird Area by the National Audubon Society. The area provides habitat for bald eagles in winter, other birds of prey, and many shorebird, songbird, and waterfowl species. It thus combines distinctive birdlife with three trails where hiking is the only permitted activity.

Rivers and Water Landscapes

At River Bluffs Open Space, the Poudre River includes a half-mile stretch with pools and shallow rapids. Waterfowl, shorebirds, and anglers use this stretch. At the open space, the Poudre River Trail connects to a 21-mile route that heads southeast through wildlife areas and parks. The river stretch and trail offer different points of reference: the waterside landscape on one hand, and a longer route through protected areas and parks on the other.

Big Thompson Parks provide public river access for fishing and picnicking. There is no admission fee. The parks are open from April through October, from sunrise to sunset. Both the seasonal opening period and time of day are therefore relevant when planning a visit.

At Carter Lake, the Carter Lake Sailing Club holds an annual regatta and other races. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with one of these events, check the event date in advance.

Routes and Regional Orientation

Trail Ridge Road crosses Rocky Mountain National Park for 48 miles one way and reaches an elevation of 12,183 feet above sea level. The same national park has five visitor centers. There, park staff can provide information about attractions, activities, and ongoing programs—a helpful resource when you want to plan your time in the park.

The Cache la Poudre River National Heritage Area begins in Larimer County, on the eastern edge of Roosevelt National Forest. It recognizes the river’s role in the development of water law in the western United States and in the advancement of water distribution systems. Activities in the area include hiking, biking, whitewater rafting, fishing, and birdwatching. Alongside individual trails and river stretches, the area highlights history and a range of activities.

When planning, it’s worth keeping the differences between the options in mind: trails at Lory State Park pass through several types of landscape and offer opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter; at Fossil Creek Reservoir Natural Area, hiking is the only activity permitted on the three named trails. Along the river, you’ll find both fishing and picnic opportunities with a set seasonal opening period, as well as stretches defined by their landscapes and trail connections.
