La Veta combines a distinctive cultural identity with a striking mountain landscape. The town lies at the foot of the Spanish Peaks and along the Scenic Highway of Legends, a scenic route. It is also surrounded by the Great Dikes of the Spanish Peaks: large, vertical granite formations radiating from the Spanish Peaks. This gives La Veta two distinct points of interest for choosing a travel destination: historic buildings and cultural institutions on the one hand, and the Spanish Peaks and their geological surroundings on the other. If you are looking for a hotel in La Veta, this distinction can help you tailor your trip to your interests.

History and Architecture

Francisco Fort is the last surviving original adobe fort in Colorado. The Francisco Fort Museum houses historic records from Huerfano County, including collections of artifacts from Native American communities, Spanish settlers, and pioneers. These collections offer different perspectives on the county’s history. In exploring regional history, the surviving fort and the diverse collections each provide a different focus.

On Main Street, the Edwin L. Smith Building, built in 1911, remains one of La Veta’s most prominent commercial buildings. Completed in 1889, La Veta Masonic Hall is among the earliest surviving examples of the stone construction style that became a defining part of the town’s architectural heritage. The two examples draw attention to different aspects of this heritage: the enduring presence of a commercial building and the importance of stone construction in local architecture.

Art and Culture in La Veta

The La Veta Creative District is a hub for art and cultural activities. The SPACe Gallery, also known as Gallery in the Park and Gallery of the Spanish Peaks Arts Council, is a venue for visual art. It features works by regional artists in rotating exhibitions throughout the year. If you want to see a particular exhibition, check the current program in advance, as the presentations change.

The performing arts add another dimension to the cultural scene: the Francisco Center for the Performing Arts (FCPA) promotes the performing arts in the La Veta community and is currently home to the Spanish Peaks Players. The FCPA offers residents and visitors quality entertainment. For show dates, it’s a good idea to check the schedule before your trip.

Scenery and Trails

La Veta lies at the foot of the Spanish Peaks; the Great Dikes of the Spanish Peaks surround the town. The La Veta Loop Trail follows gravel lanes and roads around the Town of La Veta. The trail offers exceptional views of the Spanish Peaks, the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, and Greenhorn Mountain. The Spanish Peaks thus feature in two different ways: as a landmark defining La Veta’s location and as part of the view from the Loop Trail. The view from the Loop Trail extends beyond the Spanish Peaks.

La Veta Town Park

La Veta Town Park on West Ryus Avenue has a children’s play area and a covered pavilion, and is fully open to the public. If you are planning to use either facility specifically, it’s a good idea to check its current condition before your visit.
