Crested Butte offers a variety of reasons to visit: winter cross-country ski trails and snowshoeing opportunities, activities at Mount Crested Butte, festivals, and insights into local history and culture. If you’re looking for a hotel, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: winter sports, a festival in July, mountain trails, or the museum and its historical exhibits. This lets you prioritize activities, events and culture to suit your own travel plans.

Winter Trails and Cross-Country Ski Trails

In winter, visitors can set out from town on skis or snowshoes in the Lower Loop Recreation Area to reach Magic Meadows Yurt and Gunsight Pass, or circle Peanut Lake. Crested Butte Nordic also maintains 55 kilometers of scenic cross-country ski trails in town for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. So in winter, visitors can choose between individual named destinations in the Lower Loop and a 55-kilometer network of trails in town.

Trail Activities at Mount Crested Butte

Between its base area and the summit of Mount Crested Butte, Crested Butte Mountain Resort has more than 30 miles of singletrack trails for hikers, mountain bikers and trail runners. The Crested Butte Mountain Bike Park was established at Crested Butte Mountain Resort in 2009. This year provides a specific historical reference point for mountain biking. With the help of the Silver Queen Lift, hikers can reach the summit of Mount Crested Butte in two hours. The two-hour estimate applies to the lift-assisted option. If you’re considering it for your stay, check the latest information about the lift in advance.

Festivals and Art

The Crested Butte Wildflower Festival takes place every July, lasts ten days, and offers more than 150 workshops during the month. Its July dates and number of workshops make it a distinct focus for trip planning. The Crested Butte Arts Festival gives local artists an annual platform to present their work. Its Art Alley invites families to take part in creating art. Unlike the Wildflower Festival, the focus here is on local artists and hands-on art-making. The program may change from one edition to the next, so check the details for the relevant edition before planning your trip.

Museum and Local History

The Crested Butte Mountain Heritage Museum is housed in the Tony’s Conoco building at the corner of 4th Street and Elk Avenue in Crested Butte. It features exhibits on the history and culture of skiing, mountain biking, ranching, mining and the community. Exhibit topics may change, so check the current focus if you’re interested in a particular subject. The museum also offers historical walking tours along Elk Avenue. Since the program may change, check the latest information about the tours when making specific plans. The exhibits and tours offer two distinct formats: themed presentations in the museum and historical walks along Elk Avenue.
