West Sacramento: Parks, Art and Culture
Accommodation in West Sacramento
West Sacramento offers several concrete starting points for planning a stay: parks and trails, art and culture, as well as events and sports. The parks are open from sunrise to sunset, with exceptions allowed by special permit. The city maintains 39 parks covering a total of more than 200 acres, as well as 790 acres of open space. The acreage figures distinguish parkland from additional designated open space.
Parks, Fishing Access, and Sycamore Trail
Barge Canal Recreational Access offers fishing access on the south bank of the Barge Canal. The Sycamore Trail has a different focus: its first phase is a paved multi-use trail connecting Westfield Park with Joey Lopes Park; it was completed in April 2019. The two destinations appeal to different interests: fishing by the water or a paved trail between two parks.
The second phase of the Sycamore Trail includes a pedestrian overpass across US-50, connecting Joey Lopes Park with Westmore Oaks Elementary School. As of July 2025, this phase was largely complete. By comparison, Phase I is the paved multi-use trail between two parks, while Phase II includes the overpass and the connection to the school. You can distinguish the sections by their structures and endpoints.
Art and Visitor Conditions
West Sacramento's public art can be viewed in person. The colorful kinetic artwork “WEST” is located at the end of Mill Street Pier in the Bridge District and was unveiled on October 29, 2018. The term “kinetic” refers to movement as part of the artistic design. Gallery 1075 has a different focus: this two-dimensional art space features works by regional artists and artists from West Sacramento. This lets you choose between a single kinetic work at a named location and an art space featuring two-dimensional works.
A special condition applies when visiting the CHP Museum: visitors with no connection to the California Highway Patrol must be accompanied. The museum is located on the grounds of an active training facility. If you would like to include the museum in your stay, plan for this condition in advance.
Concerts and Sports
West Sac Rhythm on the River is a free monthly summer concert series featuring live outdoor music from May through August. The concerts include children's activities in a Family Fun Zone. Food and drinks are available at Drake’s The Barn during the concerts. If you are traveling for a concert, plan for the May-through-August period and check the dates of individual events.
Sutter Health Park is the home field of the Sacramento River Cats. This adds a specific sports connection to the parks, art, and concerts. If a River Cats game is the reason for your trip, check the game dates against your travel dates.
