McCloud offers two distinct focal points for planning a trip: the town’s history and opportunities for outdoor activities. This also makes the timing of your trip a practical part of your planning.

Local History at the Museum and in the Historic District

The McCloud Heritage Junction Museum is open to visitors daily from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., beginning Memorial Day weekend. During the off-season, visits are available by special arrangement. Check visiting hours before your trip. The museum’s mission is to inform and inspire visitors of all ages about McCloud’s unique history.

The museum’s collection includes artifacts and photographs documenting life in McCloud as a progressive company town, in the logging camps, and in the connected railroad network. It also traces the transition of these ways of life to the present day. The focus is therefore not only on individual objects, but also on different chapters of local history and how they changed.

Another point of reference is the McCloud Historic District. Its boundaries encompass the historic downtown along Main Street and adjacent streets. The museum and Historic District thus offer different perspectives on McCloud: a collection that preserves photographs and artifacts, and a historic center with its defined boundaries.

A shared date: Memorial Day

The McCloud Mushroom, Music & Wine Festival takes place every Memorial Day weekend; the program includes a wine tasting. This weekend also marks the start of the museum’s seasonal daily opening hours, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. If you plan to visit during this time, check the specific festival dates and visiting hours before you arrive. Visits to the museum outside the season are available by special arrangement.

Trails, Waterfalls and Nature

The Great Shasta Rail Trail is a scenic, multi-use trail spanning 80 miles. It connects the mountain towns of McCloud and Burney. The McCloud River Falls Area offers a different experience: it lies about five miles east of McCloud and includes three waterfalls—Lower Falls, Middle Falls and Upper Falls—that are accessible by vehicle. This gives you a choice between a long route connecting two towns and an area with three named waterfalls as distinct points of interest.

The McCloud River Falls Trail is one of the best-known hiking trails in and around McCloud. Mount Shasta is also a consideration when planning your trip: according to local descriptions, its 14,180-foot volcanic cone is visible from every road in McCloud. These two details relate to different aspects of the area—a well-known hiking trail and a view associated with the town.

In the McCloud area, Mt. Shasta Ski Park offers opportunities for winter recreation. The Nature Conservancy’s McCloud River Preserve offers opportunities for hiking and fly fishing. Along with the Rail Trail and River Falls Trail, these provide different activity options without conflating them: a multi-use trail, hiking, waterfalls, winter recreation and fly fishing.

Plan Your Stay Around Timing and Interests

Two questions can help guide your travel plans: Would you like to focus on Memorial Day weekend, with its festival and the museum’s seasonal opening, or are outdoor activities your priority? Museum visits during the off-season are available by special arrangement. When looking for a hotel in McCloud, you can use your preferred travel dates and these different interests as a starting point.
