Warner Springs: Ranch History, Cupeño Heritage, and Gliding
Accommodation in Warner Springs
Warner Springs for Your Trip Planning
Warner Springs brings together a range of themes: the history of the Warner-Carrillo Ranch House, Cupeño heritage, gliding at Warner Springs Airport, and the Pacific Crest Trail. If you’re looking for a hotel, these highlights can help you decide how you’d like to spend your time in Warner Springs.
Hotel Search and Resort Status
The Warner Springs Ranch Resort is closed for renovations. If you’re considering it as a place to stay, take this status into account when planning and check again before your arrival, as it may change.
Ranch History and Cupeño Heritage
The Warner-Carrillo Ranch House was built by Vincenta Carrillo in 1857 and served as a Butterfield Stage stop from 1858 until the start of the Civil War in 1861. This role began the year after the house was built and ended with the start of the Civil War. Here, a stage stop refers to a stop along the Butterfield Stage route. This distinction helps separate the house’s construction history from its later role in transportation.
Cupa, now Warner’s Hot Springs, was part of the traditional homeland of the Cupeño. Cupa and its hot springs became a natural way station for routes from the south or east that crossed the Arizona desert to the California coast. In addition to its place in the traditional homeland, its role as a way station has its own place in history.
The historical themes emphasize different things: the Ranch House is notable for its construction date and a role that lasted for a defined period, while Cupa is associated with the Cupeño’s traditional homeland and the direction of historic routes. This allows you to consider the two highlights separately.
Gliding and Hiking
Sky Sailing at Warner Springs Airport offers glider flights for one or two people, as well as gliding lessons. Flights and lessons are two distinct types of offering. Sky Sailing is open seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. until sunset; an appointment is required after 5:00 p.m. “Until sunset” does not mean a fixed closing time, while the appointment requirement from 5:00 p.m. onward sets a specific time threshold. Check hours and appointment requirements before your arrival.
The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Highway 79 near Warner Springs twice. This gives your hiking plans a specific connection to the highway. If the trail is part of your trip, check for current closures before setting out.
Conservation and Public Use
The Warner Springs Ranch Habitat and Cultural Conservancy protects native species and their habitats, and promotes and facilitates public use of the property. Specific access conditions may vary; check them before planning a visit.
