Big Bear City: Lakeshore, Forest and History
Accommodation in Big Bear City
Big Bear City lies on the eastern shore of Big Bear Lake and is surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. Location and interests provide a starting point when choosing a hotel: history, seasonal museum visits, a park, fishing and a recurring air fair offer different points of focus. For museum visits and the Air Fair, travel dates are also important.

History and Museums
Holcomb Valley and its marker are two distinct points of reference for understanding the area: the California Historical Landmark is 4.3 miles northwest of Big Bear City and is associated with Southern California’s largest gold rush; the marker is located at the Big Bear Valley Historical Society Museum in Big Bear City Park.
The Bear Valley Historical Museum, also known as the Eleanor Abbott Museum, is at the northeastern end of Big Bear City Park on Greenway Drive. It was founded in November 1967. The Big Bear Valley Historical Society & Museum is a seasonal living history museum. During the season, visitors can watch working blacksmiths; the museum hosts special events throughout the summer. Check current opening days and event dates before visiting.
Special group tours of the Bear Valley Historical Museum are available by appointment. Arrange a date in advance.
