Paicines: Ranch History, Nature and Wine
Accommodation in Paicines
A trip to Paicines brings together a range of interests: landscapes, birdwatching, ranch history and unique experiences. Paicines Ranch connects several of these themes.
Landscapes and Birdwatching
Paicines Ranch is a historic ranch in San Benito County covering 7,600 acres. Its landscape ranges from oak woodlands and lush riparian habitats to chaparral and cliffs formed by geological shifts. The property also includes certified organic pastureland, remnant oak woodlands, seasonal wetlands and seven miles of riparian corridor. Nature experiences here focus on a variety of habitats, not just a single viewpoint.
More than 200 bird species have been documented on the ranch. The Headquarters Walk & Teal Pond birding experience passes seasonal wetlands and offers distant views of the Oak Forest. Paicines Reservoir is another point of reference, with 219 bird species recorded there. Ranch guests can reach the reservoir on a two-mile hike; vehicle access is limited. The two species counts refer to different areas: the ranch and the reservoir, respectively.
The Ranch’s Historic Heritage
Most of the historic buildings at Paicines Ranch have been restored. They are used for ranch operations or as part of the event center. The historic heritage includes the Grogan House, two large barns dating from the 1880s and the Cheese House from the 1860s.
The historic Ranch Tour with Sallie covers the ranch’s 150-year history and regenerative agriculture. The Walking Tour with the Hospitality Sheep is a leisurely stroll across the ranch with its flock of Hospitality Sheep. The two experiences focus on different things: one explores history and agriculture, while the other is a walk with the sheep. Details of the ranch tours may change.
Wine, Food and Unique Experiences
The Vineyard Walk & Wine Tasting takes you through a 25-acre certified organic vineyard. The experience includes wines made from the ranch’s own grapes; the specific wine selection may change. It combines a vineyard walk with a tasting, while the Ranch Tour with Sallie focuses on history and agriculture.
Pinball at Paicines Ranch offers something entirely different: the experience includes a private collection of 400 pinball machines spanning ten decades, as well as one hour of free play. For a meal, Overlook offers menus featuring ranch-raised meat and local, seasonal organic ingredients. The experiences described range from birdwatching and walks to history and wine, as well as pinball machines and ranch cuisine. You can plan your trip around the theme that interests you most and check in advance which details apply to your visit for the ranch experiences.
