History and culture take many forms in Truckee: exhibits explore migration and early transportation history, historic buildings tell stories of their former uses, and a marked route runs along Old Highway 40. There are also art venues and trails by the river or creek.

Cultural History in Exhibits and Buildings

At the visitor center in Donner Memorial State Park, exhibits present the experiences of emigrants, the Donner Party, the Washoe, Chinese railroad construction, and early automobile trips over Donner Pass. The topics therefore range from human experiences and Washoe history to construction and transportation history. What is on display may change over time.

The Old Truckee Jail Museum is a preserved 19th-century jailhouse. It was in continuous use from 1875 through May 1964. Museum materials cover, among other things, logging, box manufacturing, and ice harvesting, as well as the local film industry, gambling, bootlegging, and early winter sports. The exhibits at the Old Truckee Jail Museum may also change.

The Museum of Truckee History presents the history of Truckee’s main industries through artifacts and exhibits. It is located in the historic train depot in downtown Truckee. The Pioneer Monument is designated California Historical Landmark No. 134. It was completed on June 6, 1918, and stands on a 22-foot-high pedestal.

Art and Events

The Truckee Cultural District has more than a dozen art galleries and exhibition spaces, as well as artistic and cultural events held year-round. These changing cultural offerings complement the historic subjects explored in the museums and buildings. The number of venues and the program may change.

Walking and Along Old Highway 40

The Truckee-Donner Historical Society offers a historic walking tour of downtown Truckee. It typically lasts about 1½ hours and covers approximately one mile. Private group tours require advance registration and reservations; when planning, check your preferred date and its availability.

Truckee’s 20 Mile Museum is a route featuring interpretive signs along Old Highway 40. The signs are located along a 20-mile stretch of Donner Pass Road from Cisco Grove to Donner Lake. Since road conditions may affect access, check the current situation before driving.

Even the shorter trail descriptions vary considerably: a paved trail runs along the Truckee River and connects downtown with the Glenshire neighborhood. An easy trail leads from downtown along Trout Creek and into the forest.

Practical Information

The Truckee Ice Rink is half a mile south of downtown. It is seasonal and currently closed; check its current status before visiting. The KidZone Museum is located at 11711 Donner Pass Road in Truckee, California.
