When looking for a hotel in Pico Rivera, you can get a sense of the destination through its specific cultural, recreational and sporting offerings. Historical connections to Whittier Boulevard, events at the Pico Rivera Sports Arena, as well as municipal parks and a city golf course offer different points of interest for planning your trip.

Culture and historical connections

A section of Whittier Boulevard runs through Pico Rivera. Parts of the boulevard are part of State Route 72 and the historic El Camino Real. This brings together a specific local road connection and the boulevard’s broader regional designations.

The Pico Rivera Sports Arena is an important destination for Latin American music and entertainment. The arena hosts more than 40 events each year that honor and reflect the rich heritage of the surrounding community. This gives trip planning a clearly identified cultural focus alongside the city’s sports and recreational offerings.

Public art is also among Pico Rivera’s cultural offerings. In 2022, the city launched a program intended to showcase local artists and create public art throughout the community. As part of the program, public art was applied as vinyl wraps to municipal utility boxes. The program’s launch and its design give the art project a specific temporal and local context.

Parks and recreational offerings

Pico Rivera’s Parks and Recreation Department operates nine parks with 21 sports fields, two gymnasiums and four community centers. The city’s parks and recreational facilities cover more than 120 developed acres; amenities range from playgrounds to an Olympic-sized swimming pool. The department offers classes, sports leagues, workshops, recreational programs and community celebrations year-round. The range includes both organized activities and a variety of facilities for sports and recreation.

The amenities vary from park to park. Pio Pico Park has picnic tables, a playground and a walking path. Rio Hondo Park has a soccer field, outdoor basketball courts and a walking path as well. Rio Vista Park offers ball fields, picnic tables, a playground and public restrooms.

Smith Park has football and soccer fields, additional ball fields and a playground. Streamland Park has ball fields, outdoor basketball courts and a playground. Rivera Park offers different amenities: it has batting cages, handball courts and a basketball gym with open play. For reference, the differences are easy to compare: walking paths are found at Pio Pico and Rio Hondo Parks, and picnic tables at Pio Pico and Rio Vista Parks; several other facilities have fields or indoor sports. Since amenities may change during renovations, check the condition of the relevant facility before visiting.

Golf and trails

Pico Rivera Golf Club is a municipal 9-hole executive golf course. William F. Bell designed the course; it was built in 1968 on land belonging to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. If you’re considering golf as an interest for your trip, the 9-hole designation gives you a clear sense of the course’s size. Its designer and year of construction add the course’s history to this sporting connection.

Another specifically named trail is the Rio Hondo River Trail. A section of the trail runs between Sycamore Street and Bluff Road in Montebello and Pico Rivera.
