Manhattan Beach offers several specific points to consider when planning your trip: the coast and pier, a paved path along the beach, a sand dune, and places connected to the city’s history. If you’re looking for hotels in Manhattan Beach, you can first decide whether beach activities, exercise or historical topics should shape your stay. The market and tournament are also tied to specific dates.

Beach, Pier and Exercise

Manhattan Beach has more than two miles of coastline and 115 acres of sandy beach. Swimming is possible at the beach. At the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard is a 900-foot-long pier that divides the beach area. This gives you an extensive coastline and a clearly located landmark to choose from when planning your trip. More than 450 public parking spaces are available at the beach. Since availability can change, check local information before you arrive.

Fishing is allowed year-round at the Manhattan Beach Pier; check local regulations before fishing. Visitors can take surf lessons at the north end of the beach, known as El Porto. Check in advance whether lessons are available when you visit. Swimming at the beach, fishing at the pier and possible surf lessons at the north end are different ways to include the coastal area in your trip plans.

The Strand is a paved path along the beach used by cyclists, runners and walkers. Sand Dune Park features a 100-foot-high sand dune. These offer a different focus from the pier and water activities: here, the emphasis is on a path used by different groups and a distinctive sand formation in the park. When planning, you can therefore choose between exercise along the beach and a feature of the park, without combining these places into a single route.

History and Public Art

Bruce’s Beach is an important historical landmark. On February 19, 1912, Willa and Charles Bruce acquired a property on the beach path, The Strand, with the aim of creating a beach resort for the Black community. By 1916, the resort known as Bruce’s Beach had become a well-established center of the Black community. Bruce’s Beach Park is named in memory of Bruce’s Beach and honors Manhattan Beach as a city of respect and inclusion for the next hundred years. The resort’s history and the park’s present-day name are two distinct points to consider when exploring local history.

A restored beach house in Polliwog Park houses the city’s Historical Museum. Tours are available by appointment, so arrange your visit in advance. The artwork Light Gate is located at the upper end of 14th Street, between City Hall and the new library on Highland Avenue. The museum and artwork offer different ways to explore the city’s history: one focuses on the city’s past, the other is a public artwork at a precisely identified location.

Farmers’ Market and Beach Volleyball Tournament

The Manhattan Beach Certified Farmers’ Market takes place every Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Downtown Manhattan Beach. More than 60 food vendors are represented there. Since the schedule can change, check the current date before visiting. The market therefore gives you a regular weekday and a specific time window to plan around.

The Manhattan Beach Open beach volleyball tournament has been held since 1960. Amateurs can enter through qualifying rounds. If you’d like to include the tournament in your trip plans, check the dates in advance, as tournament dates and format can change. The market and tournament differ mainly in their timing: the market is listed as a weekly Tuesday event, while the tournament dates may change.
