Doyle combines local history with distinctive landscape features. When looking for a hotel in Doyle, the reason for your trip can draw your attention to different aspects of the town: settlement and railroads, Doyle Days, or the nearby mountain and riverside landscapes.

Location and Scenery Around Doyle

The Diamond Mountains border the community of Doyle directly to the west. On the opposite side of the valley to the east, the Fort Sage Mountains border the community. This places two named mountain ranges on opposite sides of the valley in relation to the town.

The Fort Sage Herd Management Area near Doyle is predominantly mountainous and steep. Wildlife in the Fort Sage Herd Management Area includes coyotes, mule deer, chukars, and quail. The horses in the area probably descended from domestic animals kept by local farms and ranches.

The nearby Doyle Wildlife Area includes Great Basin shrubland vegetation as well as riparian habitats along Long Valley Creek. Thus, the landscape features described around Doyle include not only mountainous terrain but also shrubland vegetation and riverside areas.

The Fort Sage Off-Highway Vehicle Area is located outside the town. Its location outside Doyle distinguishes it geographically from the community itself.

Settlement and Railroad History

John Doyle settled the area in 1859. Doyle’s growth was driven by the railroads; the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway reached Doyle in 1888. These dates mark different stages in the town’s development: the settlement of the area and, later, its connection to the railroad.

Willow Ranch is also part of the history of what later became the town center. The stagecoach route stop dates back to the 1870s and was located in the area that later became Doyle’s town center. On June 6, 1888, the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway reached Willow Ranch and established a station there called Long Valley.

The Western Pacific Railroad named its station Doyle as it passed through. Thus, the history of the town brings together the stagecoach route stop and the railroad-related names Willow Ranch, Long Valley, and Doyle.

Doyle Days and the 2022 Event Described

A 2022 report describes Doyle Days as an annual festival and names the World Famous Lizard Races as part of it. The description of the 2022 event places the festivities at Dixon Park.

At that event, there were vendors, artisans, food stalls, and games for children. The program also included a pancake breakfast, a flea market, an arts and crafts market, and a parade. These details refer to the festival program described for 2022; the program may change from year to year.

If Doyle Days is important to your trip, check the current festival dates and program details before making plans. This will help you schedule your stay around that year’s event.
