Heber brings together local history, parks, programs at the Recreation Center and an annual fiesta. You may be especially interested in the historical background, want to factor in a sports or dance program, or plan a visit to the nearby dunes. These topics offer different ways to shape your stay.

Local History and Agriculture

The community of Heber was established with the construction of the Imperial Valley branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the early 1900s. In 1903, Heber was named after A.H. Heber, president of the Imperial Land Company. This offers two distinct historical perspectives: the railroad branch is connected with the community’s founding, while the place name refers to a specific person and his role at the Imperial Land Company. The dates fall within the same early period of the 20th century: the early 1900s refer to construction of the branch, while 1903 specifically refers to the naming. The community’s continued existence is also tied to the importance of agriculture, which depends on irrigation.

Parks with Different Features

The parks differ in their facilities and uses. Estancia Park has a half basketball court and a 0.5-mile (about 800-meter) walking path. Children’s Park has a splash pad, restrooms and new play equipment. Edward “Jiggs” Johnson Park has a fully fenced walking path with solar-powered lights and a large lawn that can be used for soccer practice. This makes it easier to choose: Estancia combines basketball and a walking path, Children’s Park offers water play and play equipment, and Edward “Jiggs” Johnson Park has path features and space for soccer practice.

Sports and Dance Programs

The Heber Recreation Center offers adult sports programs and Polynesian dance classes. The two types of programs are quite different: adult sports activities are offered alongside classes in a specific dance style. If either program is important to your travel plans, check the current schedule in advance. This will help you match the program that suits you with your travel dates.
