When planning a trip to Whitethorn, you can choose from a range of activities: longer mountain biking routes, shorter trails with jumps and features, and hiking and wildlife viewing on the Lost Coast Trail. Distances and conditions vary, so it’s worth deciding on your preferred activity and timeframe first. Listed trail lengths are approximate; check current conditions before settling on a route. Overnight stays on the Lost Coast Trail also require a separate permit, while a shuttle is a factor when planning for the two trailheads. This brings together sporting options, wildlife viewing and practical logistics, without every trip having the same requirements.

Compare mountain biking options by length and difficulty

The Paradise Royale Mountain Bike Trail System includes about 25 miles of trails. The Paradise Royale Loop is about 13 miles long and can be connected to the Pacific Rim Trail, which adds another 9 miles. This gives you different planning options: a loop, the entire trail system, or a possible connection that adds distance. Check current trail conditions, as trails and conditions can change.

Tolkan Terrain Park offers three trail options, each about three-quarters of a mile long, with jumps and features; difficulty ranges from beginner to Black Diamond. Compared with the Paradise Royale distances, the individual Tolkan options are considerably shorter. The two offerings can therefore be compared using different criteria: at Paradise Royale, the loop and possible extension determine the distance, while at Tolkan, the difficulty of each option is another factor to consider.

Lost Coast Trail: Wildlife Viewing and Overnight Stays

The Lost Coast Trail offers opportunities to spot sea lions, elephant seals, river otters, eagles, bobcats and deer. Sightings vary by season and are not guaranteed. If wildlife viewing is a priority, you can take the time of year into account when planning, but shouldn’t count on seeing any particular species. Wildlife ranges from marine mammals to birds and other animals.

A backcountry permit is required for overnight stays on the Lost Coast Trail; check the current rules before departure. The Needle Rock Barn is an important lodging option for hikers traveling the trail and can be used for camping. Confirm its current availability before making it a definite part of your overnight plans. The permit requirement and the Barn’s availability are two separate points that you should consider individually.
