El Dorado Between Gold Rush History and the Sierra Nevada
Accommodation in El Dorado
A replica of the original sawmill and more than 20 historic buildings give Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park a tangible historical character. El Dorado County is centrally located between San Francisco and Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Gold Rush history, farming traditions, river routes, and high-country nature appeal to different travel interests; tour duration, route length, and seasonal conditions can help you choose.
Gold Rush History and Culture
Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park offers guided walks daily at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Each walk lasts 45 minutes. As operating hours can change, check the schedule before your visit. This lets you plan the guided portion of your day without confusing the duration of the walk with the total time spent at the park.
One linguistic trace of Gold Rush history is “Gam Saan”: in Cantonese, the expression means “Gold Mountain” and was the historical term Chinese prospectors and miners used for the California goldfields. In Placerville, the Fountain & Tallman Museum is a historic museum listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Architecture, language, and museum history offer different points of interest for culture-minded visitors.
Apple Hill, Farms, and Cider
The Apple Hill Growers Association was founded in 1964 to bring the public to its member farms and showcase their crops and the baked goods made from them. The association includes 50 small farms in the Camino/Fruitridge area of El Dorado County; membership may change. Apple Hill includes fruit and vegetable farms, wineries, flower gardens, and Christmas tree farms. The mix of participating businesses may also change.
The farms have been making cider for generations. Many offer special varieties that reflect the farming traditions of local families. Since individual producers and seasonal offerings may vary, check in advance which farms and cider options are available during your visit. In El Dorado County’s Fair Play wine region, Shadow Ranch offers tours and tastings.
Trails and River Routes
At Magnolia Ranch, the 2.5-mile Gerle Loop Trail is a shorter route option. This easy-to-moderate trail runs mostly level through rolling hills and oak woodlands and provides access to the American River. Non-motorized recreational activities such as hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding are permitted at Magnolia Ranch Trailhead. A much longer example is the unpaved section of the El Dorado Trail: it runs for 23 miles from the western border with Sacramento County to the depot at the County Historical Railroad Park in the town of El Dorado.
Cronan Ranch is also connected to the corridor trail along the South Fork American River, which runs between Greenwood Creek and Salmon Falls. The South Fork American River offers a 21-mile boating route that beginners and experienced boaters can complete in a full day or spread over two days at a more relaxed pace. The river is accessible from several points along Highway 49. Henningsen Lotus Park, on the river, has a boat launch; the park is open daily from 6 a.m. until dusk.
High Country and Seasonal Conditions
Desolation Wilderness covers 63,690 acres on the crest of the Sierra Nevada. Its elevation ranges from 6,500 feet to just under 10,000 feet. A wilderness permit is required year-round for day visits and overnight camping. In winter, experienced visitors can enjoy skiing and snowshoeing in this remote mountain country.
Another kind of route is the Rubicon Trail, a 22-mile off-road route for four-wheel-drive vehicles between the Gold Rush town of Georgetown and Lake Tahoe. Before driving, check route conditions, applicable use restrictions, and seasonal access. Its length, vehicle requirements, and access conditions make this route quite different from the hiking and river options.
