El Cerrito offers several distinct starting points for a stay: walking trails and natural areas, individual parks, and places connected to the city’s history. These themes can help guide your choice of hotel. The places below show which natural and cultural attractions you can include in your travel plans.

Nature, Trails, and Parks

The Ohlone Greenway covers 24 acres of natural habitat and includes 2.7 miles of walking trails. These two measurements describe different aspects: the acreage refers to the habitat, while the mileage refers to the trails. This means the Greenway can be understood both as a natural area and as a walking trail, without combining the two into a single figure.

The Greenway includes a dedicated frog habitat and areas for wetland restoration. These specific features complement the information about the trails with ecological highlights. If you’re interested in habitats as well as going for a walk, you’ll find more here than just a description of the trails.

Baxter Creek Gateway Park is described as covering 1.4 acres. At Creekside Park, a footpath is part of the Bay Trail. Alongside the Ohlone Greenway, these offer other park and trail options, each with a different distinguishing feature: one described by a park’s acreage, the other by a footpath’s place within the Bay Trail.

Hillside Natural Area has hiking and walking trails. They can be accessed from the eastern end of Schmidt Lane, the northern end of Potrero, and via King Court. These three named access points can help you find your way when planning a visit. Dogs are allowed there if they are under their owners’ control and on a leash. Check current trail conditions before visiting.

The information about these different places can help you make an initial selection by theme: The Ohlone Greenway is described in terms of both habitat and walking trails, Creekside is noted for its footpath as part of the Bay Trail, and specific access points are listed for Hillside Natural Area. This can help you choose destinations according to whether a trail, a park, or access via specific entry points matters most to you.

City History and Art

The Dorothy and Sundar Shadi History Room houses the archives of the El Cerrito Historical Society, along with historical artifacts related to the history of El Cerrito and the surrounding region. Its subject matter therefore extends beyond the city’s history to include the region as well.

The Shadi History Room is open to the public on the third Thursday of each month from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m., or by appointment. If you’re planning a visit, check the opening hours beforehand. This will help you distinguish the regular monthly opening hours from a visit that needs to be arranged in advance.

Along San Pablo Avenue, 28 interpretive sidewalk tiles depict elements of the city’s historical and cultural heritage. A self-guided walk along the avenue takes you to the Historic-Cultural Pavers and shares the history and culture of El Cerrito. The tiles and the walk provide a specific historical focus for a stroll.

El Cerrito Plaza station also features a local artwork: the walls of the stairs and escalators at the platform are decorated with mosaic murals by Mexican-born American artist Alfonso Pardiñas. This adds an example of public art in the station area to the historical attractions.

Practical Information

El Cerrito del Norte station has 44 BikeLink lockers available on demand. Since bike services at stations can change, check the latest information before your trip. The station and its lockers are a separate point of reference; plan separately for the Shadi History Room’s visitor hours and access to the trails.
