Agriculture in Forest Ranch

Sierra Cascade Blueberry Farm is located in Forest Ranch in the foothills east of Chico. Since 1989, the farm has grown certified organic blueberries there. It uses 9 acres of a 61-acre property in total: the cultivated area is part of the larger farm property, not its entire area. The farm’s visiting schedule is seasonal. If you are considering a visit, plan your timing around the season.

Landscape and Biodiversity

The Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve covers 7,835 acres. Its landscape features include a trout stream, tributaries, springs and seeps, as well as riparian areas, forests, woodlands, chaparral, grasslands, and rocky cliffs. Waterways and riparian areas lie alongside forested and open land. These habitats are home to more than 600 plant species and 140 wildlife species.

Getting to the Reserve and Access

The Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve is currently closed to all visitors because of the 2024 Park Fire. Check its status before your trip, as the closure may change. For general access planning, the entrance gate is normally closed; organized events or guided tours are exceptions, and access is requested through the RAMS system.

To reach the Reserve, travel 2.4 miles west on Highway 32 toward Chico from the intersection with Nopel Avenue in Forest Ranch. When traveling from Forest Ranch, the 14 Mile House Road settlement and its historic marker are just before the Reserve. This landmark adds a historical point of reference for navigation, without changing the current closure.

Fishing in Big Chico Creek within the Reserve is subject to a seasonal rule from November 1 through April 30: artificial lures are permitted, only one hook is allowed, and there is no catch limit. This fishing rule does not change the fact that the Reserve is currently closed to all visitors.

Other Trails in the Area

In the Forest Ranch area, the Butte Creek Trail can be reached from California State Route 32 south of the Forest Ranch Fire Station via Garland Road and Doe Mill Road. Check road conditions and access before driving. This makes the trail a separate point to consider in your trip planning, without confusing it with access to the Reserve, which is currently closed.

Historic Roads and Stops

The 14 Mile House was one of ten inns along Humboldt Road. The inns were spaced about a day’s journey apart, reflecting the historical route’s stage structure. Paul Lucas’s ranch was also located on Humboldt Road. These two facts place different historic stops along the same road without treating them as one and the same.

A road built by the Chico and Humboldt Wagon Road Company connected the silver mines in the northeast with the Sacramento River. This road context adds a link between the mines and the river to the history of the inns. For a stay in Forest Ranch, the farm, the Reserve’s landscape, and historic traces of the route offer different points of interest; actual visiting conditions, especially those for the Reserve, remain crucial.
