Discover Piedmont: Parks, Art, and History
Accommodation in Piedmont
Piedmont can be explored for trip planning through its parks, public artworks, and local history sites. The green spaces offer distinct features: at Crocker Park, landscaped beds meet a public artwork and a connection to the city’s early history. Piedmont Park brings together a viewpoint, a creekside path, and historic features. So, when making your selection, consider whether you’re most interested in scenery, activity, or local history.
Parks and Their Features
At Crocker Park, a shady lawn and beds of rhododendrons, camellias, and ferns are part of the landscape. The property is also connected to the area’s early history: Wallace Alexander, one of Piedmont’s founders, once lived here. At the center of the park stands the granite sculpture “A Bear and Her Two Cubs” by sculptor Beniamino “Benny” Bufano. The plantings, the former residence, and the artwork give the park distinct design and historical points of interest.
The entrance to Piedmont Park on Wildwood Avenue offers panoramic views of San Francisco Bay and Mt. Tamalpais. The park also has a formal Exedra entrance with a distinctive blue ceramic vase; a traditional Japanese teahouse stands near the Community Center. A winding path follows Bushy Dell Creek through an area shaded by redwood trees. The park’s history includes a history trail with nine markers commemorating important milestones, as well as a reconstructed rock grotto at the site of former mineral springs.
Dracena Quarry Park covers eight acres on the site of a former quarry. Together, Piedmont’s six city parks and landscaped green spaces offer lawns, wooded paths, four tennis courts, children’s playgrounds, and picnic facilities. If a particular amenity or an exact number is important for your plans, check the latest information: park amenities and figures may change.
Activities and Visit Planning
The Piedmont Community Pool is open year-round. It has a 12-lane pool for lap swimming and competitions, as well as a heated, three-lane activity pool with a ramped entry. Schedules and admission details may change; check both before your visit if you’re planning for a specific time. Kennelly Skate Park has purpose-built concrete ramps and bowls for skateboarding. BMX riding is permitted there on a restricted schedule. Check the current rules before including BMX in your plans.
Local History Sites
The Piedmont Historical Society’s History Room includes yearbooks, artifacts, historic clothing, postcards, scrapbooks, photographs, and house inventories. The collection combines printed and photographic records with historical objects. The Piedmont Historical Society’s June MacKay Rutledge Memorial Room offers insight into Piedmont’s history and is open by appointment. Confirm your appointment before visiting.
The places described appeal to different interests: at Crocker Park, landscaped grounds and a sculpture sit alongside a historical connection to one of the city’s founders. Piedmont Park combines a specific viewpoint with a creekside path and historical features. This lets you choose individual destinations based on what you’d like to see or do there, rather than assuming all parks have the same focus.
