Museums and Local History

Saline County Museum Day is an annual event focused on local history. The program includes special presentations, guided tours, and hands-on activities; dates vary each year. It offers an overview of different aspects of the county’s history.

The Bryant Historical Museum preserves the history of the community of Bryant and traces its development from its agricultural beginnings to modern times. Exhibits range from campaign materials and photographs of the former school, which burned down in the 1950s, to old fire uniforms and an antique spinning wheel. The collection also includes relics from the former Prickett dairy farm and material about President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s train visit to the city. Together, these varied items offer a glimpse into daily life, agriculture, and local events.

At the Gann Museum, Niloak and other pottery, as well as artifacts from Indigenous peoples of North America, are displayed alongside memorabilia and historical materials related to Saline County. The collection also includes artifacts and memorabilia belonging to Dr. Gann Sr. and Jr. The museum building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.

The Bauxite Historical Association and Museum preserves the history and culture of Bauxite, a company-founded town in Saline County. The museum is housed in Bauxite Community Hall, completed in 1926. In 2008, the family of H. Tyndall Dickinson commissioned the large bronze statue “Unsung Heroes–Bauxite Miners” for the hall grounds; the commission and its intended location are part of Bauxite’s mining history.

Historic Sites in Benton

The Benton Commercial Historic District lies at the center of the original 1836 town plan. Its grid is arranged around a courthouse square with the courthouse. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 24, 2008. The Shoppach House is the oldest surviving brick building in Saline County; the bricks for the house and its well were made locally. In spring and summer, local farmers’ markets are held on the streets of downtown Benton. The streetscape brings together architectural history and a seasonal outdoor market.

Lakes and River Landscapes

The Saline River is the last major river in the Ouachita Mountains that has not been dammed. The Saline River Water Trail in Saline County is 14.2 miles long. These two details provide different kinds of context: one describes the river’s landscape, while the other gives the length of the water trail.

Sunset Lake is a public fishing spot in Saline County. It has a one-mile paved loop trail, picnic tables, a pavilion, a fishing pier, and a boat ramp. Check the facilities locally before you go. Boating, fishing, diving, and jet skiing are popular at Lake Norrell, a 280-acre lake in northern Saline County. The two lakes therefore offer different experiences: specific facilities are listed for Sunset Lake, while a range of recreational activities is described at Lake Norrell.

Old River Bridge and Southwest Trail

The restored Old River Bridge is 260 feet long and consists of iron beams, two large trusses, and a wooden deck supported by iron columns. The dedication ceremony for the reconstructed bridge was held on June 24, 2025. It is part of the 60-mile Southwest Trail between Hot Springs and Little Rock and can be used by cyclists and pedestrians. Check trail conditions before your trip. The bridge thus connects a specific structure from the region’s history with a designated route for cyclists and pedestrians.
