Buckeye: Desert Landscapes, Trails, and City History
Accommodation in Buckeye
Get to know Buckeye through its different attractions: natural desert landscapes, trails in protected areas, local history, and activities ranging from motorsports to water recreation. If you’re looking for a hotel in Buckeye, you can first sort your planned activities by what interests you most. This will help clarify which aspects of the destination matter for your stay.
Desert Landscapes and Trails
Buckeye Hills Regional Park covers 4,453 acres of natural desert landscape. Skyline Regional Park is located in the southern White Tank Mountains and is an 8,700-acre mountain preserve. Its designated area is therefore larger than that of Buckeye Hills Regional Park. Each description emphasizes a different feature: natural desert landscapes in one, and a mountain preserve in the southern White Tank Mountains in the other.
Skyline Regional Park also has miles of trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders.
City History and Museum
The 25-foot-tall Hobo Joe statue overlooks Main Street in Downtown Buckeye. In 2020, Hobo Joe returned to its place as the mascot of Downtown Buckeye. The figure’s name, location, and role as a mascot connect it to the city’s history.
The Buckeye Valley Museum houses pre-Columbian pottery, historic photographs, and local artifacts from Buckeye’s earliest days. The museum is also listed as a certified historic institution in Maricopa County. Its collection thus brings together different forms of local heritage: pottery, photographs, and artifacts from Buckeye’s early days.
The area’s transportation history can also be understood through two dates. The Arizona Eastern Railroad reached Buckeye in 1910; by 1915, Buckeye was connected to its first highway. The railway’s arrival and the connection to the first highway therefore stand as two early milestones.
