Mining History and Tours
The historic Stampede Trail is north of Healy, on the west side of the highway. It was originally built in the 1930s as a route to the Stampede Mine. Healy was established as a permanent railway station by 1919; mining also began there. The railway and mining are two specific links to the town’s history, while the Stampede Trail points to an earlier connection to a mine.
There are ATV trails in the Healy area. ATV tours on the Stampede Trail can also be arranged in Healy, with views of Denali and the Savage and Teklanika rivers. The historic route and the tours thus point to different aspects of the Stampede Trail. Since operators may change, check which tours are currently available before making plans.
