Discover Northport: History, Art and Events

Northport offers several reasons to visit: local history, art and a seasonal celebration each offer a different focus. When looking for a hotel, first consider whether you want to focus on exhibitions and historical topics, an art workshop or a set event date. This will help you plan your travel dates around your interests.

Northport History Across Several Periods

The Northport Visitor Center & Heritage Museum features exhibits and photographs about Northport’s history. The story spans Indigenous history, settlement in 1816 and the present day. The sequence of topics places 1816 within a broader history rather than limiting the focus to that date. Photographs add a visual perspective to the exhibitions. The Shirley-Christian Home was built by James Shirley in the 1840s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

On April 12, 2025, the museum reopened to the public for events. If you’d like to combine your visit with a program, check the latest event dates.

Art as Exhibition and Workshop

The main location of the Kentuck Art Center and Festival in Northport comprises five repurposed buildings with seven artist studios, three galleries, three classrooms and the Gallery Shop. This combination brings together artistic practice, presentation and instruction. It offers several ways to explore the art scene rather than limiting the focus to galleries alone.

Kentuck Studio 2 in Northport is the center for two-dimensional art workshops. Courses are open to all ages and skill levels; no prior experience is required. Two-dimensional art refers to work in two dimensions, on a flat surface. This focus can help you distinguish the course offerings from a general interest in art and plan your trip accordingly.

Dickens Downtown in December

Dickens Downtown is an annual Victorian Christmas celebration held on the first Tuesday evening in December in Downtown Northport. The 2025 edition included Theatre Tuscaloosa performances featuring scenes from A Christmas Carol. The celebration has a clear seasonal connection, while the theater program mentioned here is specifically for 2025.

Coordinate Your Travel Dates and Hotel Search

The options for choosing your travel dates vary: Dickens Downtown takes place on the first Tuesday evening in December, while availability and schedules for Kentuck Studio 2 workshops may change. If a course will determine your stay, check the current offerings and dates. If you’re traveling for Dickens Downtown, confirm the event date and current program before booking a hotel.
