Talladega offers plenty to explore on a trip centered on racing history and cultural heritage. When looking for a hotel in Talladega, consider whether you want your stay to focus on motorsport, art, architecture, or regional history.

Racing History and Its Landmarks

Talladega Superspeedway was built in 1969. For geographical orientation, the racetrack is located on Speedway Boulevard, which runs parallel to Interstate 20. The International Motorsports Hall of Fame complements the motorsport theme with three exhibition halls and the McCaig-Wellborn Motorsports Research Library. Allow about an hour for a self-guided walking tour; current arrangements may change.

The Talladega Walk of Fame in Davey Allison Memorial Park is also part of the racing history: plaques there honor race car drivers. These offer two different ways of remembering the sport side by side—the exhibition of motorsport objects and themes on the one hand, and plaques honoring race car drivers on the other.

Art, Architecture, and History

The Dr. William R. Harvey Museum of Art houses Hale Woodruff’s Amistad Murals. The three murals depict the uprising aboard the ship, the trial before the Supreme Court of the United States, and the arrival of Africans on the coast of Africa accompanied by American missionaries. The murals were installed at the museum in 2020; the Amistad-and-Founding-Mural series is on permanent display there. Nearby, the Civil Rights Garden honors well-known civil rights leaders of the 20th century.

Built in 1906, Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall originally served as Talladega’s public library. Today, the museum presents exhibitions by local and regional artists. Its year-round program for the general adult public includes art classes, lectures, and workshops. If you want to attend a particular event, check the latest dates in advance.

Architectural history can also be seen in the Silk Stocking District. The historic district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on December 13, 1979. Architectural styles represented there include Queen Anne, Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, American Craftsman, and other late Victorian types. McAlpine Place is one of the oldest houses in Talladega County and was built several years before the city of Talladega was founded.

Other historical details connect places with specific dates and people: on April 1, 1867, the first class of blind students attended the Academy for the Blind at Manning Hall. Reuben Asbury taught the class, and his wife, Cassandra, served as housemother. DeForest Chapel houses 17 stained-glass windows by David C. Driskell.

The Historic Ritz Theatre presents two seasons a year featuring national concerts, Broadway shows, and local theatrical performances. Productions may change, so if you’re planning to attend a particular show, check the latest event dates.

Landscape and Regional History

The city of Talladega borders Talladega National Forest. The forest covers 375,000 acres of hilly terrain and low mountains, adding a landscape perspective to the historical and cultural themes.

The historic Kymulga Grist Mill, Park, and Covered Bridge complex is located in Alpine, an unincorporated community in Talladega County. The complex includes nature trails. Kymulga Mill and the covered bridge were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Here, you can combine architectural and industrial history with time outdoors.

Majestic Caverns in Childersburg is a privately operated cave system offering guided tours. Since operating arrangements may change, check the latest information before your trip. The different focuses of these destinations can help guide your hotel choice: motorsport, art and architecture, and history and landscape each offer their own reason to plan a stay.
