You can explore Athens during your stay through its music, history, and outdoor trails. If you’re looking for a hotel in Athens, these themes can help structure your trip planning—from an annual music event to choosing between a loop and a longer one-way route.

Music and Events

The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is held annually on the first full weekend in October and combines a music event with a competition. The Alabama State Fiddle Champion and state champions in more than a dozen other categories are crowned. At the convention, regional artisans showcase their crafts on the historic grounds of Athens State University and offer custom-made souvenirs. If you’re planning your trip around the event, check that year’s dates before making plans.

Athens’ historic Courthouse Square is the setting for numerous events. The Athens Courthouse Square Commercial Historic District meets the criteria for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places because of its local significance in commerce, politics and administration, and transportation.

History in Several Chapters

The Fort Henderson Historic Site is an earthwork fortification built by US Colored Troops during the American Civil War. Trinity School was built on the ruins of Fort Henderson. It later became the first high school for African American students in the state of Alabama. The two sites therefore tell of different chapters in history: a wartime fortification and a school of particular significance to the education of African American students.

The College Inn/Newby Gulf Station Museum is located in a two-building complex built in 1933, comprising a gas station and a diner. The gas station was among the first built in Athens. The restored Houston Memorial Library serves as a public library and historic museum. It honors George S. Houston, who lived there and served twice as governor of Alabama and as a US senator. The Alabama Veterans Museum spans military conflicts from the American Revolutionary War to the present day, displaying memorabilia from these eras.

Parks and Outdoor Trails

Big Spring Memorial Park is located in the Beaty Historic District and offers opportunities to see ducks, herons, and koi. The park also includes a pavilion, a tennis court, and six pickleball courts. This combines wildlife watching with specific sports and recreation amenities.

The Athens Recreation Loop is a 1.53-mile loop trail from the Athens Recreation Center to Swan Creek Park. It’s suitable for walking and family outings on foot. The Richard Martin Trail reaches Athens at Mitchell-Coffman Park in Piney Chapel. Its more than 10-mile one-way route passes Civil War sites, agricultural landscapes, and areas with diverse wildlife. The two trails therefore differ in both length and route type: a loop or a longer one-way route.

A greenway connects Athens SportsPlex, the Athens Recreation Center, and the Athens Stadium Track, and extends to U.S. Highway 72. Together with the variety of trails and the amenities at Big Spring Memorial Park, it offers a diverse picture of outdoor opportunities.
