Daşoguz welaýaty: Silk Road, Architecture and Natural Landscapes
Accommodation in Daşoguz welaýaty
Köneürgenç is located in Daşoguz welaýaty; the Great Silk Road passed through the welaýaty. This brings together a specific historic site and a historical route. You can use these themes as a starting point for planning your trip and decide whether to focus on architecture and cultural history or on landscapes and nature reserves.
History and Architecture
Zamahşar was an important trading and scientific center on the Silk Road. The surviving remains of the Zamahşar city fortress are considered an example of medieval Turkmen architecture. The Kutlug-Timur Minaret is considered one of the tallest minarets in Central Asia. Şasenem Fortress dates from ancient and medieval times. The Mausoleum of Il Arslan is one of the historical monuments of Daşoguz welaýaty.
Landscape, Protected Areas, and Biodiversity
The Gaplaňgyr State Nature Reserve covers 275,735 hectares. The Gaplaňgyr protected area complex is home to 218 bird species; 58 of them breed in desert and coastal habitats, and 27 species are listed in the 2024 Red Book of Turkmenistan. The Gaplaňgyr complex and its associated restricted nature reserves are also home to 400 species of wild plants.
The Sarygamyş State Nature Reserve, which has restricted-protection status, was established in 1980 and covers 541,466 hectares. The Şasenem State Nature Reserve, which has restricted-protection status, was established in 1983 and covers 109,002 hectares. Of these three protected areas, Sarygamyş is the largest by area.
Lake Sarygamyş lies at the northern edge of the Karakum Desert and the southern tip of the Ustyurt Plateau. It is situated in an ancient, elongated depression that is about 150 kilometers long and 90 kilometers wide. The water level is 38 meters below sea level.
The distinction is clear in terms of what may interest you: the lake’s location at the edges of two different landscapes, and the depression’s dimensions and elevation, are the focus there; in the Gaplaňgyr protected area complex, the focus is on species numbers and habitats. In this way, landforms and biodiversity emerge as distinct nature themes.
Cultural Connections and Events
The Mosque of Aşyk Aýdyň Pir, a famous singer and musician of the Orient, is located in Daşoguz welaýaty. His mausoleum became a pilgrimage site for people working in the arts and culture.
