Balkanabat lies at the foot of the steep, arid Big Balkan massif. The theater, regional museum and sports facilities offer different points of interest; information about the railway station and airport helps put their locations into context. Landscape destinations such as Yangykala and Tasharvat belong to a separate regional context. This makes it possible to view the city from cultural, sporting and landscape perspectives.

Theater, Museum and City History

The State Drama Theater, named after Great Saparmyrat Turkmenbashi, hosted regional rounds of national theater competitions. Such rounds took place in 2024 and 2026; performance and competition dates may vary. If a theater event is important to your trip, check the calendar for your travel dates. Another stage format was the creative competition “Magtymguly, sözlär tili türkmeniň,” held in Balkanabat in August 2024. Folk theaters, drama groups, theater studios and puppet theaters took part. These examples illustrate two different competition formats in the city.

The Balkanabat Regional Museum of History and Local Lore has departments devoted to revival, nature, fine arts, history and ethnography, as well as a hall for temporary exhibitions. Several thematic areas are presented alongside changing displays. The provincial library is another cultural point of interest: it has six reading rooms.

Sports and Wellness

The multifunctional sports complex in Balkanabat covers 13 hectares and has a stadium with 10,000 seats. These figures describe two different measures: the area of the entire complex and the stadium’s capacity. In addition, a circuit sports complex for equestrian sports was built in Balkanabat. The city’s sports facilities thus range from a multifunctional venue with a stadium to a circuit dedicated specifically to equestrian sports.

A report by the state news agency dated September 4, 2025, lists therapeutic and wellness services at the “Nebitchi” sanatorium in Balkanabat. The report also locates the Health Trail nearby. Services and operations may change. If you are considering the sanatorium for a particular service, check in advance what is available during your travel dates.

Getting Around the City

Balkanabat Airport is two kilometers east of the city, on the road to Aşgabat; the railway station is on the southern edge of the city. The two locations are therefore on different sides of the city. Mosaics in the station’s main hall depict oil workers on the job. Alongside the theater and museum, this motif provides a distinct architectural feature and refers to the theme of work in the oil industry.

Regional Landscapes and Historic Routes

The ruins of Tasharvat caravanserai lie less than 40 kilometers from Balkanabat, at the Tasharvat spring. They once stood along ancient caravan routes on a branch of the Great Silk Road. Tasharvat therefore represents a historical connection to a route in the area around the city, not a site within Balkanabat itself.

Yangykala is also part of Balkan Province. The landscape is approximately equidistant from Balkanabat and Turkmenbashi; its steep cliffs show shades of white, yellow, red and violet. Yangykala thus adds a regional landscape dimension to the city’s urban themes. The distinction is useful for orientation: the theater, museum and sports complex are points of interest in Balkanabat, while Yangykala is in Balkan Province.
