Tunceli – Museum, Rivers and Nature
Accommodation in Tunceli
Tunceli brings together a museum and cultural sites in the city center with a striking river landscape. The surrounding area adds valleys, forests and other nature destinations. When planning your trip, you can decide whether the city’s cultural offerings or the region’s landscapes should shape your stay most.
Culture and History in Tunceli
Tunceli Müzesi is housed in a listed, three-story former barracks building. German architects designed it for military purposes in 1937. From 1937 to 1949 it served as a barracks, and then as accommodation for government officials until 2015. The building was restored and converted into a museum between 2015 and 2020. It became a place for social and cultural activities.
The museum’s departments cover archaeology, ethnography and coins, as well as traditional agriculture, flora and fauna, beliefs, stone artifacts and recent history. A total of 1,838 objects are registered in the archaeological, ethnographic and numismatic collections. The museum’s awards also offer an indication of its recognition beyond the region: in 2022, it reached the final of the European Museum of the Year competition organized by the European Museum Forum. At the 2023 European Museum Academy Luigi Micheletti Awards, it was named one of the three best museums in Europe.
Another cultural landmark is Gole Çeto Ziyareti, located in Tunceli city center where the Munzur Suyu and Pülümür Suyu rivers meet. Cem Evi is immediately above it. A visit can offer insight into the beliefs, rituals and customs of people in the region. Check access arrangements in advance. Dar Sokak, also centrally located, has shops selling regional food products.
Rivers and Landscapes Around the City
The Pülümür Çayı rises on the slopes of the Avcı Mountains and flows into the Munzur Suyu in central Tunceli. Fed by snowmelt and numerous streams, the river carries a plentiful volume of water. The river landscape is therefore not only a geographic reference point for the city, but also a defining feature to explore in the surrounding area.
The Pülümür Valley begins about 20 kilometers north of Tunceli, along the road to Pülümür, and extends as far as Pülümür. Its landscape features include dense forests, waterfalls, rocky slopes and gorges. The valley has potential for hiking, climbing and paragliding. Its vegetation and natural features also offer opportunities for picnics and camping. If you plan these activities, check access and safety conditions locally.
Örenönü Tabiat Parkı is on the Pülümür road, 3 kilometers from Tunceli. It is considered a place to stop and rest in natural surroundings, with food and drink available. Check the current conditions before visiting. Another perspective on the landscape can be found on the drive from Tunceli to the Munzur Valley: the route follows the Munzur Suyu through Munzur Vadisi National Park. Waterfalls and wildflowers are part of the scenery along the way; sightings of mountain goats, squirrels and foxes are possible, but cannot be reliably planned.
The Wider Tunceli Destination
In the wider Tunceli destination, Munzur Vadisi National Park stretches along the valley to the Munzur Mountains. Its starting point is 8 kilometers from Tunceli city center. The national park’s flora includes 1,518 different plants, among them 227 species endemic to Türkiye. These regional features add to the picture of the area, but are distinct from the city’s cultural sites.
The wider Tunceli destination also has described potential for rafting: an approximately 20-kilometer stretch of the Munzur Suyu between Aşağı Torunoba, Sarıtaş and Halbori Gözeleri is suitable for it. This describes a possibility, not a currently operating offering. If you have concrete plans, check accessibility and local conditions.
