Discover Siirt: Mosques, History and the Botan Valley
Accommodation in Siirt
Siirt brings together historic mosque architecture and a route descending into the Botan Valley. This gives you different options when planning your trip: exploring the architectural history of Cumhuriyet Camisi and Tarihi Ulu Camii, finding your bearings at Saat Kulesi and historic craft sites, or hiking a trail with a stated length and moderate difficulty rating.
Mosque Architecture and History
Hıdr-Ül Ahdar, now known as Cumhuriyet Camisi, is one of Siirt’s oldest mosques; its origins are thought to date to the early 12th century. The stone building has a single dome. After the Seljuk period, a room with two domes was added on the east side, changing the floor plan to a rectangle. In 1929, the mosque was restored again with the support of parliament member H. Hulki Aydın. Its minaret was renewed, and it was given the name Cumhuriyet Camisi.
Tarihi Ulu Camii is a separate building with several historic phases of expansion. In 1129, it was repaired and expanded under the Iraqi Seljuk ruler Mugīsüddin Mahmûd b. Muhammed Tapar; further repairs and expansion followed in 1260 under the atabeg Mücâhid İshak. The first building followed a Great Seljuk floor plan: a vaulted prayer area was connected to an iwan. Later, two domed rooms and two barrel-vaulted aisles running across the iwan were added. This resulted in a transversely oriented floor plan. The minaret is also distinctive in its form: it has a square base and a cylindrical shaft; its geometric ornaments include glazed bricks and tiles.
Getting Your Bearings and Local Crafts
Siirt Saat Kulesi is east of Siirt Ulu Camii. Its clock mechanism houses a clock about 250 years old, which was moved there from Ulu Camii in 1974. The building, its location and the clock’s relocation connect a specific landmark with the history of both buildings.
More Cultural Sites in the Wider Siirt Destination
The wider Siirt destination also includes other historic sites. Babudarp Camii dates back to the 18th century. After restoration, it was returned to its former state by the regional Vakıflar Directorate. Hadervis Church and Mir-Yakup Monastery are in Siirt city center. The historic Helvacılar Çarşısı is also located there.
Siirt’s copperwork and tinning have a long history and have been practiced for many years as an important local craft in the city center. Bakırcılar Çarşısı was the historic center of copperworking. Copper pitchers, pots, cauldrons and bowls were among the items made there. The Botan Valley National Park contains cultural remains from the Assyrian Empire; part of the historic Silk Road also runs through the protected area.
Hiking Trail and Activities in the Botan Valley
The Antik Yürüyüş Yolu starts on the road from Siirt into the valley and winds down to the floor of the Botan Valley. The round trip is 4.6 kilometers long and rated moderate. These two details are useful to consider together when planning: the stated distance explicitly refers to the round trip, while the difficulty rating classifies the route as moderate.
For a different view of the Botan Valley, there is Botan Uçuş Noktası, a paragliding launch site near Siirt. It is about a 15-minute drive from the city center. Launches take place from a south-facing runway on a slope of the valley. The Botan Valley is also suitable for activities such as paragliding and rafting. The wider Siirt destination therefore offers both a designated hiking trail and other outdoor activities in the Botan Valley.
