Discover Muş: Seljuk caravanserai and historic sites
Accommodation in Muş
Hacı Şeref Mosque is located inside the Seljuk Aslanlı Han. Muş also offers traditional houses, a museum, a tomb, a church, and notable sites in Muş Merkez district. Both architectural forms and precise locations play a role.
Architecture between caravanserai and courtyard
The location of Hacı Şeref Mosque inside Aslanlı Han is a distinctive architectural arrangement: the mosque is situated within the han itself. Its cultural significance therefore lies not only in a single building, but also in the relationship between the mosque and the han. The han was built during the Seljuk period; the mosque’s location within it gives this place its own character.
Two features define the traditional houses in Kale Mahallesi, Muş Merkez: they are generally two storeys high and rise behind a courtyard. Their form can thus be understood in terms of both the number of storeys and the relationship between courtyard and house. Unlike the mosque inside the han, the focus here is on the recurring form of traditional homes.
Tomb, museum, and church
Müştak Baba’s tomb is in the centre of Muş, near the historic Alaeddin Bey Mosque. The two location details serve different purposes: the centre places the tomb within Muş, while the mosque is a named landmark nearby. This makes it possible to describe its location precisely without confusing the tomb with the mosque.
The Muş Museum is housed in the building of Atatürk Primary School, built in 1938, and opened in 2021. The dates refer to different things: 1938 is the year the school building was constructed, and 2021 is the year the museum opened. At this site, a school building and the museum’s later opening are therefore clearly distinguished in time.
The Arak Church in Kepenek, Muş Merkez, features a Roman style in its design and materials. A large bell tower stands about 250 metres away. The reference to style describes the church and its materials; the approximate distance gives the tower a separate point of reference. This site therefore differs both from the houses, whose form is shaped by courtyards and storeys, and from the museum, with its two distinct dates.
Landscape and orientation within the district
Haspet Castle is located on the eastern spur of Mount Kızıl Ziyaret in Soğucak Village, Muş Merkez. The site has partially preserved walls and two towers. Its position on the mountain spur connects it to the landscape, while the remains of the walls and the towers describe its architectural features. Unlike Müştak Baba’s tomb in the centre, Haspet Castle is located by the place name Soğucak Village.
Mercimekkale Hill lies within Muş’s central district, on the Muş–Varto road. Here, an administrative designation combines with the location on a specifically named road. These are two distinct points of reference: the district gives the broader location, while the road indicates the hill’s more precise position.
Kale Park is in the Kale neighbourhood, one of Muş’s old settlement areas, at a spot above the city centre. The neighbourhood, its settlement history, and its elevation together indicate its position. This location differs from Mercimekkale Hill’s roadside setting and Haspet Castle’s position on the spur of Mount Kızıl Ziyaret.
