Çerkeş
Accommodation in Çerkeş
Landmarks include Kemer Bridge over the Çerkeş Çayı, the tomb of Pir-i Sani and the Murat IV Hamam. The townscape of the houses and the municipal indoor swimming pool also provide points of reference when planning a stay. Its location on a main road and the distances to four cities add a wider regional perspective to these local points of reference.
Cultural History in the Architecture
Kemer Bridge crosses the Çerkeş Çayı, also known as the Ulusu. Three arches of hewn stone define the structure, which is about 50 metres long. Its connection to the river, material, form and dimensions make the bridge easy to describe as a distinct structure. Unlike the tomb and the hamam, it can be understood in terms of its riverside location, its arched form and its approximate length.
The tomb of Pir-i Sani is located in the mosque of the same name. It was built in the 18th century and has a square floor plan measuring 5.00 × 5.00 metres, topped by a dome. The floor plan describes its shape at ground level, while the dome forms its upper covering. These two features offer different points of reference for understanding the tomb’s architecture.
The Murat IV Hamam is located in the town centre and was built in the 16th century by Sultan Murat IV. It was intended to generate income for the mosque named after him and to serve as its charitable endowment. Together with the tomb, it offers a comparison across time: the hamam dates from the 16th century and the tomb from the 18th. These two dates place the structures in different historical periods.
Houses and Townscape
The houses of Çerkeş display all the characteristics of Ottoman-Turkish architecture and are mostly two storeys high. The houses add a broader architectural perspective to the individually named landmarks: alongside the bridge, tomb and hamam, the design of the houses also comes into view. The town’s architecture can thus be described both through individual structures and through its houses. The description of their height remains general: most, but not all, of the houses are two storeys high.
