Discover Adıyaman: Museum, mosques and city history
Accommodation in Adıyaman
Adıyaman can be explored through its different historical periods and buildings: the museum spans the Paleolithic to the Ottoman era; mosques, a church, a bazaar and the castle complete the cultural picture. The following places and details offer different points of reference for planning your trip.
From the museum to the city’s history
The Adıyaman Museum brings together archaeological, ethnographic and numismatic collections. It contains around 30,000 objects in total, of which approximately 2,000 are on display. The objects on show span the period from the Paleolithic to the Ottoman era. The collection therefore offers both a broad historical overview and specific insights into different groups of objects.
The ethnographic hall displays carpets, kilims and Cicim weavings collected in the region alongside women’s and men’s clothing, silver jewelry and copper objects. The exhibition themes thus range from archaeological and numismatic collections to textiles, clothing and metalwork from the region. If you are particularly interested in everyday objects and crafts, these items offer a specific point of reference within the museum.
Mosques and sacred history
Adıyaman Ulu Mosque is located in the city center. An inscription records its construction in 1863; another records a restoration in 1902. The two dates therefore refer to different events involving the same mosque.
Eskisaray Mosque is also located in the city center, in the Eskisaray neighborhood. It was built by İbrahim Paşa in the Hijri year 1148 and has been repaired several times. Yenipınar Mosque is also located in the city center, in the Yenipınar neighborhood; Hacı Mahmut had it built in 1720. When comparing the dates, it is worth noting the calendar reference: a Hijri year is given for Eskisaray Mosque, while the dates given for Ulu and Yenipınar are 1863, 1902 and 1720.
The Church of Mor Petrus and Mor Paulus is located in the Mara neighborhood in central Adıyaman. It is dated to the 4th or 5th century and is used by the Syriac community. If you are planning a visit, check locally whether visits are possible.
Bazaar, cuisine and getting around
The historic Oturakçı Bazaar in the city center sells regionally typical carpets, kilims, Cicim weavings, bags and saddlebags as tourist goods. These handicrafts make the bazaar a different focal point from the museum and religious buildings. Adıyaman’s cuisine includes Çiğ Köfte, İçli Köfte, Adıyaman Hıtabı, Tavası and Kebabı. Restaurants serving regional dishes can be found in the provincial center.
Hısn-i Mansur Castle is also a landmark for getting around the city: it is located in the city center on an artificially raised hill about 25 meters high. There are five road connections for arriving from Gaziantep, Şanlıurfa, Malatya, Kahramanmaraş and Diyarbakır. Adıyaman also has an airport. If you are planning to fly, check current connections in advance.
Additions in the wider Adiyaman destination
Beyond the city itself, the wider Adiyaman destination includes the ancient city of Perre in the Örenli or Pirin neighborhood of Adıyaman Merkez. It was one of the five major ancient cities of the Kingdom of Commagene. Its archaeological features include around 200 rock-cut tombs and settlement remains, as well as cisterns, wine presses, Byzantine wall structures and excavated mosaic floors dating to the 5th century BC. This regional addition differs from the mosques, museum and bazaar in the city center.
The long Nemrut tour also starts in the wider Adiyaman destination, departing from Adıyaman at 02:00. It goes to watch the sunrise at Nemrut Dağı and also visits Arsameia, Yeni Kale, the Cendere Bridge and the Karakuş Tumulus, taking around five to six hours. The early start is a practical planning consideration if you want to include this regional tour in your stay. Tour itineraries and operators may change; check the current schedule in advance.
