Elgg combines a historic townscape with cultural and outdoor activities. You can focus your stay on the lanes and the local history museum, explore themed trails, or choose hiking and biking routes. The outdoor swimming pool and seasonal market offerings are also options to consider when planning your visit.

Historic townscape and local history

The historic townscape is defined by largely continuous rows of houses and a broad network of lanes. Vorder-, Ober-, Hinter- and Untergasse form this square-shaped layout. Elgg has just over 20 public fountains; five date from the 16th century and are specially decorated on public holidays. The Reformed Church of Elgg stands at the centre of the lanes, with origins dating back to the 9th century.

The Elgg Local History Museum, housed in the Humbergtrotte, presents the history and customs of Elgg. Its collection ranges from crafts and agriculture to viticulture, domestic life and schooling, as well as church affairs and politics. Among its historical treasures is a grain mill dating from 1668. The museum offers a distinctive perspective on local history, while the lanes and fountains bring it to life in the townscape.

Trails for different interests

The «Gschichtli-Weg» is about 1.3 km long and begins at Lindenplatz, making it a good choice for a walk through the old village centre. At ten stops, numbered QR codes link to a continuing story that you can listen to in Swiss German recordings. Elgg has two different «Gschichtli-Weg» trails: one in the Städli and another from Neuelgg to the village centre and back.

If you want to choose hikes by duration, the «Tour d’Elgg» offers seven suggestions, each taking between one and four hours to walk. The Elgg Forest Nature Trail is designed as a circular hike of about an hour. Along the way, small information boards introduce native tree and shrub species. The descriptions use different reference points: an approximate distance is given for the route through the village centre, while the hiking options are described by their duration.

Another hiking route leads from the southern part of Elgg through the Fahrenbachtobel ravine to the historic Guhwilmühle farm inn and onward to the Schauenberg. At 890 m above sea level, it is the highest point in the municipality. The Vitaparcours starts at the Elgg swimming pool car park and follows 15 stations through Rumisberg Forest. Check route details before setting out.

Biking, games and swimming

The specially designed bike trail runs in two stages from Schauenberg via Olpis and Guegenhard Forest down to Elgg. The two singletrack sections can be reached from Elgg via a signposted circular route that ends back in Elgg. The outdoor escape game «Gaston & Baptiste» offers another way to explore Elgg: the whole town becomes a scavenger-hunt playground. The 1.4 km route leads from the Coop in Elgg through the town to Elgg Church.

Elgg outdoor swimming pool combines a historic bathing facility from the 1930s with modern swimming facilities and a small current channel in the large pool. Facilities include a 50-metre pool, a separate paddling pool and a playground with a sandpit. The pool offers different swimming areas alongside the playground, while the small channel is part of the large pool.

Markets and local traditions

The Elgg market takes place every Saturday from May to December and offers fresh produce and regional specialities. If you plan to visit the market, check the specific market date before your trip. Local food traditions include Elggermannen: these are braided-dough pastries shaped like men and traditionally baked for St Nicholas Day. The «Äschli», as it is known locally, also has its roots in the pre-Reformation period.
