Meilen: Culture, Architecture and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Meilen
Meilen offers a range of ways to shape your stay: local history at the museum, striking architecture, hikes and insights into viticulture. Depending on whether you are interested in historical topics, longer routes or a guided tasting, different experiences can be at the heart of your plans.
Local History in the BĂĽrgerhaus
The Meilen Local Museum is located on Kirchgasse in a heritage-listed BĂĽrgerhaus dating from the 19th century. It collects and archives historically significant artefacts and documents the local history. Four permanent exhibitions and changing themed exhibitions explore different chapters in the history of the municipality and its surroundings on Lake Zurich.
The permanent exhibitions focus on the pile dwellers, Friedberg Castle and the history of Meilen. The museum displays original finds from a major excavation at Friedberg Castle, which took place between 1976 and 1979. A dedicated gallery is devoted to the landscape painter Johann Jakob Meyer, who was born in Meilen in 1787 and died in 1858. The different exhibition themes offer several ways to explore the local museum: from early traces of settlement and a specific archaeological site to local history and regional art.
The museum also has a cosy reading corner with books about Meilen and the current special exhibition. Visitors can enjoy coffee and chocolate there. This means a museum visit can also be combined with a quiet reading break.
Architecture and the Lakeshore
Another architectural highlight is the Breuer Lakehouse in Meilen. The flat-roofed villa was built in 1958/59 on behalf of Dr Willy Stähelin and designed by New York architect Marcel Breuer as a geometrically structured building. It is classified as a heritage property of regional significance. The house adds an example of modern architecture to the older architectural history of the Bürgerhaus.
The BadhĂĽsli is located by the lake. Its listed amenities include a covered seating area, steps into the lake, an outdoor cold-water shower and a fireplace with a grill grate. This makes the BadhĂĽsli a different focus from the exhibitions and architectural history: here, the emphasis is on spending time right by the water and on the available seating and bathing facilities.
Hiking Trails with Different Highlights
The Pfannenstiel Panorama Trail is around 27 kilometres long. Its listed highlights include viewpoints overlooking Lake Zurich and the Alps, ravines with diverse plant and animal life, and historic ruins. One viewpoint along the route is called Hohenegg/Meilen. Those interested in natural and cultural landscapes will find several such features along this longer hiking route.
Another route is the Forch–Pfannenstiel–Meilen hike. It leads into the Meilemer Tobel, passes the ruins of Friedberg Castle and then reaches Meilen. Friedberg Castle can therefore also be explored as a stop on a hike, while the local museum displays original finds from the castle in a permanent exhibition.
The Meilemer Adventure Trail runs through the Dorfbachtobel and is designed for families. Depending on the route chosen, the hike takes around three to four hours and covers about five to seven kilometres; it is particularly suitable for children aged seven to twelve. A free app lets visitors of all ages immerse themselves in a story as they hike. By comparison, the Pfannenstiel Panorama Trail, at around 27 kilometres, is much longer; the time and distance for the Adventure Trail depend on the route chosen.
At the Meilen Vita Parcours, you can complete the fitness trail or hike to the Pfannenstiel. Two fountains there have signs with instructions for arm baths. This makes the activity different both from the family-oriented Adventure Trail and from the longer panoramic routes.
Viticulture and Getting There
Schwarzenbach Weinbau offers guided visits lasting 90 to 120 minutes. You follow the journey of the grape from the vineyard, through the cellar and into the glass. The visit ends with a tasting of six to eight wines from the current selection. The duration gives you a concrete timeframe for planning your trip; if you are interested, check the details for your preferred visit date.
Meilen boat station is about 500 metres from the railway station. If you are planning to travel by boat, check the timetable for your travel date. After arriving in Meilen, hikers can make their return journey by boat or S-Bahn. This lets you plan your return using either of these modes of transport without tying it to a specific endpoint on a hiking route.
