Saint-Saphorin combines its location on Lake Geneva with the steep vineyards of Lavaux, a significant historic church and a strong wine culture. These themes offer different ways to choose what to explore: you might be interested in the landscape, want to discover the village’s history or plan a wine tasting. The Maëlys en Lavaux tour also leads through the vineyards from Saint-Saphorin; however, its stated duration does not include the return journey.

Between the lakeshore and the Lavaux vineyards

The municipality lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Geneva and includes around one kilometre of lakeshore. The wine-growing village itself stretches along a narrow spur of land at the foot of the Lavaux vineyards, around 30 metres above the lake. The well-preserved, steep vineyard slope below the village is especially characteristic. The municipal area extends northwards from the lakeshore up the slope; a narrow spur reaches a plateau southwest of Mont Pèlerin. The village, vineyards and municipal area thus refer to different geographical areas: the elevation refers to the village above the lake, while the description extending to the plateau covers the larger municipal area.

Church, Roman remains and festival

The present-day Eglise de Saint-Saphorin was built in 1520 by Sébastien de Montfalcon and is classified as a historic monument of national importance. The site’s history reaches back further: the church’s basement contains Roman Villa Glerula ruins that can be visited. Different periods of history thus coexist in one building: Roman remains and the 16th-century church. Saint-Saphorin is also one of the Lavaux villages listed as a site of national importance.

Another cultural highlight is the Offenbach Festival, held every three years in the heart of the wine-growing village. If you want to plan your stay around the festival, check the event dates; the schedule alone does not indicate a specific next date.

Taste wine and discover the terroir

Saint-Saphorin is known in Switzerland for the wine produced in its vineyards. In the village centre, the Caveau des Vignerons de St-Saphorin offers tastings of Saint-Saphorin appellation wines, presented by the producers themselves. So it is not only the wine that takes centre stage: the winegrowers also share their knowledge of the terroir. Around ten winegrowers take turns there on weekends. As opening arrangements may change seasonally, it is advisable to check whether tastings are taking place before visiting.

In addition, the historic Caveau, with its impressive vaulted ceiling, welcomes groups of 20 or more year-round by reservation and can accommodate up to 80 people. Confirm the reservation and capacity in advance. Group visits by reservation are a separate practical arrangement; do not confuse them with the regularly rotating tastings at the Caveau des Vignerons.

Plan your tour and travel accordingly

The Maëlys en Lavaux discovery tour leads from the village of Saint-Saphorin through the vineyards to Rivaz. The tour is listed as taking two to three hours, not including the return journey. Bear this limitation in mind when planning your time, and check the route details before setting off, as they may be revised. The described route connects the village, vineyard area and Rivaz; however, the stated duration does not cover a round trip.

The Rivaz–St-Saphorin landing stage is served by boats operated by the Compagnie générale de navigation on Lake Geneva (CGN). If you are planning a boat trip, check the timetable separately. Bains Reymond has changing facilities, showers, a diving board and a barbecue.
