Frenières-Sur-Bex between gorge trails and riverside scenery
Accommodation in Frenières-Sur-Bex
Frenières-Sur-Bex lies at 865 metres above sea level in the valley of the Avançon de Nant. When choosing a place to stay, hikes through the gorges, the course of the river and traces of history provide practical points of reference. You can consider a route with an approximate duration, get a sense of a circular walk through several places, or follow a route that combines a river crossing with a climb. Spinning-wheel workshops offer another activity to explore.
Scenery and trails in the Avançon Valley
The Avançon de Nant flows through Les Plans-sur-Bex and Frenières, where it meets the Ivouette. Hiking routes also follow the river: the Le Bévieux via Frenières route passes the Avançon and its waterfalls; the Gryon–Frenières route winds through the Avançon gorges in cool, wooded surroundings.
The municipality of Bex extends across part of the lower Rhône Valley and the neighbouring Alps, in the wider area around Frenières. The larger eastern part of the municipality lies in the Vaud Alps and mostly encompasses the Avançon catchment area.
Hikes with different route profiles
An easy hike from Frenières to Pont de Nant passes through the spectacular Avançon gorges and takes about 1 hour and 55 minutes. The duration may vary depending on conditions. The hike includes a suspension bridge over the gorges. Use the time estimate as a rough guide when planning, and allow for varying conditions.
The Le Bévieux via Frenières circular hike passes through Le Monts, Verneys and Frenières-sur-Bex before returning to Le Bévieux. The Avançon and waterfalls are along the way. The circular route and the named places give you practical points of reference for understanding the route.
The Gryon–Frenières route passes through the Avançon gorges in wooded, cool surroundings. It crosses the Avançon and then climbs uphill to Frenières. The route therefore combines a river crossing with a subsequent climb to Frenières.
Historical traces and spinning-wheel workshops
The historic Ergnault defensive tower once guarded the entrance to the Avançon Valley. Along the way from Frenières to Monts-sur-Bex are the ruins of a small castle, a fortified structure called Ergnau. These two features offer different points of historical interest: the former defensive role at the entrance to the valley and a fortified structure on a named route.
A description of La Filature de l’Avançon, current as of August 2026, lists open spinning-wheel workshops for everyone at the Garage à Laines on Route des Plants. Dates and availability may change, so check what is on offer in advance.
