Saint-Luc brings together a range of reasons to visit: Tignousa is all about starry skies and planets, the St-Luc/Chandolin ski resort reaches great heights, and various trails explore the village’s history. For planning, it is worth keeping the locations and seasonal activities separate: a visit to the observatory, a tour of Saint-Luc, and activities in the mountains each have a different focus.

Starry Skies and Mountain Access

The François-Xavier Bagnoud astronomical observatory is located above Saint-Luc in the Val d’Anniviers, at an altitude of 2,200 metres. The observatory in Tignousa has a digital planetarium. Public events exploring the starry sky take place year-round, including evenings devoted to astronomical observation. Individual dates depend on the season. Before your trip, check which programme falls within your travel dates.

Tignousa is located at the mountain station of the funicular railway from St-Luc. It can only be reached by funicular or on foot, not by car. Check the access options before setting off. CarPostal connects Siders with Saint-Luc and other villages in the Val d’Anniviers year-round. Since timetables may change, it is a good idea to check the connection for your specific travel date.

Ski Resort, Bike Park and Trails

Saint-Luc shares a ski resort with Chandolin, which reaches an altitude of 3,000 metres. The Funiculaire de St-Luc–Tignousa funicular provides access to the shared ski area. The St-Luc Bike Park has three downhill mountain bike trails; a funicular serves them from May to November. This is a seasonal period, so check in advance whether the offering matches your travel dates.

For a different perspective on the landscape, hike the Chemin Tignousa–Hôtel Weisshorn, which offers views of the valley floor and the four-thousand-metre peaks of Valais. Weather and trail conditions can affect access. The Chemin des Planètes presents a scaled-down model of the solar system, with the distances between celestial bodies also shown to scale. Facilities at Planet Park, near the Tignousa restaurant, include a spacecraft, slides, a zip line, swings and a high ropes course.

Village History Along Trails and at Historic Sites

The Balade des poèmes leads through Saint-Luc and its surroundings. Poems by Armin Pont, a cobbler and poet from the village, convey what life in the Val d’Anniviers used to be like in Patois. At nine QR codes located at symbolic sites, you can access spoken recitations in Patois and French translations of the poems. The route thus connects language with local history, rather than telling the story through dates alone.

The Chemin des Fours à Chaux passes around ten remains of lime kilns. The kilns were built by villagers in the past. Since 2019, local residents have been uncovering the remains each year and restoring them along the trail. The Chemin du Pain offers a different historical focus: this educational trail in Saint-Luc explores the region’s former grain-growing culture. Its information boards also cover traditional buildings from earlier times.

The Pierre des Sauvages above Saint-Luc can also be viewed as a tangible historic site. The stone bears 300 cup marks, or small circular indentations of various shapes and sizes, and is considered the largest cup-marked stone recorded in Switzerland. The Moulins de St-Luc date from the 16th century and were renovated in 1986. The site includes a corn mill, a barley crusher with a walnut oil press, two mills for rye and wheat, a fulling mill, and the miller’s house.

Visits and Seasonal Considerations

A historical walking tour takes in 22 notable sites in the village. The Petit Musée Lucquérand is housed in a traditional cellar and displays old tools and everyday objects; plan your visit according to the season. Guided tours are also seasonal: local residents share the past and present history of Saint-Luc. Check the dates in advance if you plan to include this type of village tour.

The history of the municipality is also worth noting: Saint-Luc was an independent political municipality until 31 December 2008. On 1 January 2009, it merged with Ayer, Chandolin, Grimentz, Saint-Jean and Vissoie to form the municipality of Anniviers. When choosing your travel dates, you can weigh up different options: the observatory offers public events year-round, while the bike park and guided village tours operate seasonally.
