Anniviers: Villages, Hiking Trails and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Anniviers
Discover Anniviers through the distinct village histories and trails of the Val d’Anniviers. The valley lies between St-Luc, Chandolin, Grimentz and Zinal. Vissoie also has its own historic character: in this medieval village, preserved buildings bear witness to its past and rich religious heritage. This variety offers different options for planning your trip, from village history and themed trails to alpine scenery and regional products. If you’re looking for a hotel in Anniviers, you can start by considering which of these themes you’d like to shape your days.
Discover village history along different trails
In the Val d’Anniviers, 14 heritage trails use buildings and other structures to tell the story of the villages and their residents. In Ayer, a heritage route winds through a cluster of wooden buildings around the church and takes in ten of the village’s notable sights. The permanent Edmond Bille photography tour in Chandolin offers a different perspective: its 24 stops invite you to rediscover historical scenes on a walk through the village.
Exhibitions and historical walks also tell the story of the region in different ways. The Espace Ella Maillart in Chandolin is housed in the former Sainte-Barbe Chapel. Photographs, drawings, articles, posters, objects and a video presentation showcase Ella Maillart’s work; check visitor information before your trip. The Historical Tour of Zinal starts at the chapel and leads to historic areas such as the old village, the first inn, the hotel district and the alpine farming hamlets.
In St-Luc, a trail near Les Moulins explains the customs of the former Lucquérands; the mills themselves form an industrial complex dating from the 16th century. Other trails focus on religious history or past work: the Chemins des Chapelles lead to chapels around a hundred years old, while the Lime Kiln Trail passes roughly ten remains of lime kilns. Their connection to the rebuilding of St-Luc after the fires of 1845 and 1858 is considered likely, but not confirmed.
The La Lée copper mine is regarded as evidence of the mining industry in the Val d’Anniviers and is described as Switzerland’s only copper mine open to the public. Its 500 metres of tunnels and information panels explain mining work and the formation of the Alps. Visits are seasonal and subject to safety conditions—take this into account when planning your trip.
Hiking trails, mountain views and planning your time
The multi-day Val d’Anniviers Tour is a circular hike with stages between Pontis, Chandolin, St-Luc, Zinal, Grimentz and Vercorin. Along the route, you can enjoy views of five 4,000-metre peaks: Dent Blanche, Ober Gabelhorn, Zinalrothorn, Weisshorn and Matterhorn. The Val d’Anniviers Weisshorn Bike route covers a different timescale: it is of moderate difficulty, 24.67 kilometres long, takes around four hours and leads to the Hotel Weisshorn above St-Luc. Route information may change seasonally; check it before setting out.
Individual places are also linked to distinctive trails: St-Luc is associated with a planet trail, while Zinal is described as the starting point for the upper section of the Sierre-Zinal mountain race. Lac d’Arpitettaz is a good choice for a family picnic; the walk there takes about two hours. Weather and the season can affect trail conditions. Another striking feature of the mountain landscape is the Tzina-de-Vio footbridge: at 2,600 metres, it is 45 metres long and spans a river flowing through a waterfall 120 metres below.
The Zinal Glacier stretches from 2,000 to 3,450 metres in altitude. It was formed where the three glaciers Grand Cornier, Durant and Mountet converge. Such landscape features add a geographical perspective to the trail experience: on one hand, there are stages and walking times; on the other, the shapes and elevations of the alpine surroundings.
Regional specialities and wine
Regional specialities and wines are part of the identity of the Val d’Anniviers and are available in the valley’s restaurants and bars. Raclette du Valais AOP “Anniviers” is a raw-milk cheese made in dairies from October to June according to a traditional recipe. Vin du Glacier matures in larch barrels, which are topped up each year with wine taking their age into account. This produces blends that can contain wine more than a century old.
This gives you a clear choice of different experiences when planning your trip: multi-day hiking stages, individual routes, historic village trails or regional specialities. These distinctions can help you tailor your stay to your interests and find suitable hotels in Anniviers.
