Discover Vérossaz: Trails, Views and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vérossaz
Vérossaz offers travelers several ways to plan their visit: hiking trails of varying lengths, viewpoints, opportunities to observe nature, and local cultural sites. Walking times and route descriptions each refer to specific trails. When comparing hikes, these details can help you estimate how much time each route will take and what it is like.
Hiking routes and walking times
The Plateau de Vérossaz route is rated easy, is about 9.02 kilometers long, and takes around three hours. It climbs to a plateau overlooking the Rhône Valley, passes through the village of Vérossaz, and continues toward La Doey and Daviaz. Before hiking, check local guidance on trail conditions.
A second estimate is given for the Sur les traces de saint Sigismond route, which is expected to take about two hours and 45 minutes. An optional three-kilometer loop adds an hour to the hike. By comparison, the Plateau de Vérossaz route is listed as taking about 15 minutes longer; with the loop, the Sur les traces de saint Sigismond route is considerably longer. This helps put the two stated durations in context without treating the routes as if they followed the same course.
The Tour des Dents-du-Midi is a well-marked trail about 42.5 kilometers long, accessible from several directions. The described section leads from Mex through the forests of Orgères and Seintanère to Vérossaz, then across the Chemin de la Poya into the plain and on to Saint-Maurice. Given the length and nature of this route, check local trail conditions in advance.
The Chemin des Cases, locally known as La Poya, is another way to travel between Saint-Maurice and Vérossaz. Before setting off, check local safety guidance. Another route, the Tour de la falaise, winds uphill from Les Cases to Les Bassex, a hamlet below the village of Vérossaz. These different route descriptions provide concrete landmarks to help you decide which trail you would like to explore further.
Landscape, nature and views
The trails above Vérossaz offer opportunities to observe the exceptional wildlife that lives there and the diverse flora on the slopes. Seintaneire lies on the spur of the Cime de l’Est and is considered an exceptional viewpoint. The Plateau de Vérossaz route, in turn, leads to a plateau with views over the Rhône Valley.
The Plateau de Vérossaz is also home to an astronomical observatory, surrounded by the Dents de Morcles and Dents-du-Midi mountain ranges. If you are planning a visit, check the latest information on booking arrangements in advance. The Chétillon area also has a Parcours VITA. It starts in the Chétillon parking lot near the soccer field; check for current information about the course before your visit.
Cultural sites and local history
The Church of Sainte-Marguerite in Vérossaz was built in 1838, consecrated on May 30, 1883, and dedicated to Saint Margaret. Beside it stands the bell tower, built next to the former chapel from 1531 onward. The separate dates tell of different chapters in the area’s building history.
The historic hydraulic mill complex in the hamlet of Chavannes includes a grain mill, a press and a sawmill. The Sentier découverte de Vérossaz is a discovery trail with ten information panels, inaugurated on August 27, 2022. It showcases local cultural heritage, including the Druid’s Stone, a mill and the communal bread oven. To preserve it, the bread oven was moved to its present location and put back into operation in 1983.
North of the plateau lies the Pierre druidique de Combrevoux: a large gneiss stone worked by fire. It is considered one of the most interesting known Druidic monuments in Switzerland. A connection to a sacrificial practice is part of local legend. The Grotte à saint Sigismond is also a place of oral tradition. It lies in the gorge of the Mauvoisin stream below the Vérossaz soccer field.
Another monument commemorates the writer Marie Trolliet, known as MARIO. Created by Casanova, the monument was inaugurated in Vérossaz on October 23, 1921, and bears the inscription “Le Vieux Pays.” Together with the church, mill complex, discovery trail and legendary site, it shows the variety of Vérossaz’s cultural heritage.
A seasonal tradition
Held annually in July and September, the transhumance takes more than 200 heifers and calves from Vérossaz to Salanfe via Les Cases, La Rasse and the Col du Jorat. The exact dates and route may vary. If you would like to include the transhumance in your travel plans, check the latest information in advance.
