Prarreyer lies in Val de Bagnes on the left bank of the Dranse de Bagnes, between Versegères and Montagnier. It is a locality within Versegères in the municipality of Val de Bagnes in the Swiss canton of Valais. Two routes and the chapel provide useful landmarks for getting your bearings during your stay: the “A la rencontre du Verbier sauvage” hike starts in the village; the Chemin des 700 ans leads from Versegères through Prarreyer.

Hiking from Prarreyer

The “A la rencontre du Verbier sauvage” hike is 9.0 kilometres long and is listed as taking 3 hours and 40 minutes. You can factor both figures into your day’s plans: if you have several activities in mind, you can set aside a dedicated block of time for the hike. Check the route details before setting out, as trail information may change. The trail passes through coniferous forests, across steep pastures and alongside rushing streams. This sequence of landscapes answers a different planning question than the duration: it gives you a sense of the area’s character, while the time estimate helps you gauge how long the hike will take.

Mountain bike route and photo exhibition

The Chemin des 700 ans leads from Versegères through Prarreyer. An official summer map from 2021 designated it as a mountain bike route; conditions and classifications may change. Check the information before your ride. Along the route, you can see the open-air exhibition “Les Secrets du Val de Bagnes”. It features large-format photographs created through encounters between eleven artists and residents of the valley. This origin gives the exhibition a direct connection to the people of Val de Bagnes and adds a cultural perspective on the valley to the route. This is a practical difference when choosing between the two routes: the hike can be assessed by its duration and landscape, while the photo exhibition adds a cultural element to the Chemin.

The chapel of Prarreyer

The chapel of Prarreyer is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Flüe. Its round shape is more reminiscent of transalpine buildings than of other chapels in Valais. Inside is a fresco by the Geneva-born painter Albert Chavaz, who came from Savièse. The architecture and the artwork have different cultural associations: the shape can be compared with transalpine buildings, while the fresco points to Chavaz’s work.
