The Conthey district is an administrative region of Switzerland. If you are looking for a hotel in Conthey, first consider what you want to focus on during your stay: winegrowing, historic sites, nature or seasonal activities. The different themes and places offer specific pointers to help you choose your destination.

Winegrowing and regional offerings

In Chamoson, the Sentier du Cep Ă  la Cime is offered as an approximately three-hour circular hike through the vineyards. As this activity is available seasonally, check before your trip whether it is being offered during your visit. The Forfait valaisan combines a regional menu at the Caveau de Chamoson with a visit to a wine cellar and a tasting of three wines. Here, too, it is advisable to confirm seasonal availability. The Caveau offers 150 wines from 21 Chamoson wineries; ask about current visitor offerings before your trip.

Winegrowing in Chamoson encompasses 39 grape varieties. Among the white varieties, Sylvaner is the most prominent; it is called Johannisberg there. In Vétroz, Amigne accounts for 8 percent of the 180 hectares of vineyards. Vétroz winemakers draw on a two-thousand-year winegrowing tradition. These details offer different insights into the grape varieties and the history of winegrowing in the two places.

The Cave Jean-René Germanier in Vétroz cultivates an estate of almost 60 hectares and produces around 700,000 bottles there each year. Wine tastings are offered; visitors can also taste the Williams pear brandy that the winery has been producing since 1945. Confirm visitor offerings before your trip. A wine trail runs from Ardon to Conthey through 716 hectares of terraced vineyards and over the Amigne vineyards above Vétroz. The options therefore range from specific tasting experiences to a route through the vineyards.

Architectural history and cultural sites

The historical educational trail through the medieval Bourg de Conthey begins at the Tour Lombarde. An interpretive trail was established there in summer 2022. In the 13th century, under Count Peter II of Savoy, the tower formed the northwestern corner of the fortifications. Today, it houses a Caveau promoting local wines and regional products; check visitor arrangements in advance.

The Chapelle Sainte-Pétronille is considered Conthey’s oldest chapel and is one of the few surviving Baroque treasures in French-speaking Valais. At the church of Saint-Séverin, visible sections of a 12th-century Romanesque church remain in the walls and bell tower. They make it possible to trace the history of the building, which was extended in 1844. The Musée de la Forge offers another way to explore local history: it displays Prosper Zambaz’s former forge, his work and items he made or repaired. Check locally how to access the museum before your visit.

Chapels and religious traditions also shape the cultural character of Nendaz. The Chapelle St-Barthélémy is associated with important processions. At the annual service on August 24, cheeses from the region’s alpine pastures are blessed. Services are held at the Chapelle de Planchouet in summer; it can be reached by public transport. Check the religious events calendar before your trip.

Nature and trails

The Biotope des Epines in Conthey is a 14-hectare nature area with an observation post and several information boards. Access is via the RhĂ´ne embankment. For a stay focused on nature, it offers a different perspective from the vineyards or historic buildings.

A well-signposted trail also runs through Conthey’s winegrowing area, with 33 panels about vines and wine, as well as fauna and flora. You can walk it in sections over several stages. The Bisse de Chervé can be walked along its entire route on a well-maintained hiking trail; check the conditions on this high-altitude route before setting out. In the Jardin japonais in Nendaz, a stream winds between rocks and alpine flowers. The official Nendaz Trail 30km is permanently marked. Check trail conditions and markings before setting out.

Seasonal activities and reasons to visit

Near Nendaz, the 4 Vallées ski area has 410 kilometres of pistes, including 220 kilometres in the Printse sector. The stated operating period runs from November to May; seasonal conditions and available pistes may vary. If winter sports are to be the focus of your stay, check piste availability for your planned travel dates.

Saint-Pierre-de-Clages is Switzerland’s only official book village. Its Fête du Livre attracts literature lovers from around the world every year; event dates vary, so check them in advance. In Ardon, Gallo-Roman remains can be dated to the 1st to 3rd centuries AD based on Roman coins found there. Visits are possible only by prior reservation.

Chamoson-St-Pierre-de-Clages station is a stop on the Simplon line and is served only by regional trains. Check the timetable before travelling. With its wine offerings, historic sites, hiking trails and seasonal activities, you can choose what to explore in Conthey based on what matters most for your trip.
