Weinfelden among vineyards and the Thur
Accommodation in Weinfelden
Weinfelden brings together winegrowing, a compact town layout and a range of themes for a stay: paths through vineyards, baths, and architectural and local history. As a hub on the SBB Zurich–Romanshorn line and the Thurbo regional railway, the town can also be factored into your travel plans. Weinfelden is compact and easy to explore on foot. Which of these aspects matters most to you can guide your choice of hotel and how you plan your days here.
Winegrowing, Landscape and Local Trails
With around 4,530 ares of vineyard area, winegrowing plays an important role in Weinfelden. The town lies in gently rolling countryside at the transition between the Thur Valley and Ottenberg. At the foot of Ottenberg are vineyards, well-kept countryside, floodplain forests and restored streams; the surrounding area is ideal for hiking and cycling. Weinfelden itself is also easy to explore on foot. The town has restaurants serving local and international cuisine.
Hiking among the Vineyards and along the Thur
One specific hiking tour is the Weinfelden Wine Trail: The route is 9 kilometres long, has 240 metres of elevation gain and takes a stated 2 hours and 15 minutes. It starts and ends at Weinfelden railway station and passes through the vineyards of Weinfelden, Boltshausen and Ottoberg. This gives you a clear start and finish point, along with details of the distance, elevation gain and time required. Suggested hikes around Weinfelden also include the Mittelthurgau Castle Trail and the Thur Trail from Weinfelden to Bischofszell. The options therefore range from a route through several vineyard areas to a trail whose named course links two towns.
Baths and Sports Facilities
You can choose between the baths according to their pool types and facilities. Thurbad has a 50-metre pool, a non-swimmers’ pool and a baby pool with a spray park. The indoor swimming pool has a 25-metre pool and two diving towers; swimming and aquafit classes are also available there. Pool length, diving facilities and classes offer different points of reference when planning a stay that includes swimming. These facilities are among the sports offerings that set Weinfelden apart, alongside its trails and cultural attractions.
Architecture, Theatre and History
The Evangelical Church in Weinfelden is legally protected and classified in the ISOS as a building of particular value and a protected individual element of building group 0.1. It was inaugurated on 10 March 1904. It is a centrally planned building with a cruciform floor plan and a crossing tower. Its architecture combines angular Romanticism with the flowing, soft forms of early Art Nouveau. The term “crossing” refers to the point where the building’s axes intersect, above which the crossing tower stands. The church’s design and the blend of different styles can thus be understood in these terms.
The Theaterhaus Thurgau is also part of the cultural scene: Since 2008, the theagovia theater has used the venue as its new performance space. It is home to bühni wyfelde, Theater Bilitz and Theagovia. The town’s history goes back further still. The Thurgau liberation movement began in spring 1798 in Weinfelden’s town hall square. In autumn 1830, two public assemblies were held in Weinfelden, contributing to the introduction of a new Thurgau cantonal constitution. The constitution enshrined the direct election of representatives by the people and the principle of public access in government administration. A five-metre-wide bridge over the Thur already stood in Weinfelden in AD 124; it is interpreted as evidence of an important trading centre at the foot of Ottenberg.
