Hiking along the Thur
The “Along the Thur” hike begins at Müllheim-Wigoltingen railway station. It is 9.4 kilometres long and takes 2 hours and 20 minutes. The difficulty level is easy; the route includes 75 metres of ascent and 85 metres of descent. It first follows the railway line to the Thur and then heads downstream, mostly along the river embankment. Along the way, you pass under the 174-metre-long Eschikofen railway bridge. The details on duration, distance and elevation gain and loss provide different points of reference for planning the hike.
Landscape between hills and plain
In the northern part of the municipality, hills run from west to east. The southern part is a plain formed by deposits and gradual infilling. The hills in the Müllheim area are moraines left behind by the Lake Constance glacier during the last ice age. In the northernmost part, moraine ridges lie among the hills of Rebberg, Weingarten–Oberhof and, in particular, Eggwald. The erratic boulders near today’s Mühlekreisel roundabout are also traces of glaciation. These landforms help explain the local geography; describing them does not require reference to any one particular viewpoint.
Art, leisure and activities
The Müllheim Sculpture School is a recognised private specialist school and Switzerland’s only sculpture school offering basic training. Since 1990, it has offered courses for adults as well as leisure courses for young people and children. The facilities described include a gallery, a café and restaurant, a library and a quiet room. If you are interested in a course or a particular facility, ask in advance about current offerings and usage options.
Fussballgolf Thurgau has 18 holes, each 50 to 125 metres long, covering a total distance of around 1.5 kilometres. Twelve biodiversity stations with information boards explore various aspects of local flora and fauna. The facility also includes a bistro area accessible to wheelchair users and pushchairs, as well as a children’s play area with a sandpit and a goal-shooting wall. As operating and booking details may change, check them before visiting. Another option for games is the Müllheim miniature golf park, on the main road between Kreuzlingen and Frauenfeld, near the Müllheim motorway exit. There are several fire pits in Müllheim suitable for visits and leisure breaks.
Village character and architectural history
The village developed westwards from its oldest area, with its church, Kehlhof and sawmill, along the stream. Its history also includes the Grüneck workers’ settlement, laid out from 1859 to around 1920 on an orthogonal, or right-angled, street grid. It consists of small fenced-in houses, gardens, front yards and garages. The site of the former Grüneta textile factory is also in Grüneck. Established from 1857 with production halls, garages and an arboretum, it now houses workshops used by various companies and artists. In earlier centuries, viticulture in Müllheim’s vineyards played an important role.
The Church of St Verena was rebuilt or newly constructed between 1473 and 1489. The Reformed Church of St Verena is listed as a Category B cultural property; the former Maltbach Mill has the same classification. The Church of the Assumption of Mary was built between 1966 and 1968 to plans by Rorschach architects Bächtold and Baumgartner, and was consecrated on 5 May 1968. It houses a mechanical slider-chest organ built in 1972 by Gebr. Späth of Rapperswil to plans by Frauenfeld organist Josef Holtz. The furnishings also include a Baroque statue of the Virgin Mary from the paritätische Kirche. Together, these buildings reflect different periods in the local history of the church.
