Discover Hörhausen
Accommodation in Hörhausen
Hörhausen is located in the canton of Thurgau on the Seerücken ridge, on the cantonal road between Pfyn and Steckborn. The village combines a long local history with offerings related to agriculture, tree nurseries and walking. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Hörhausen, village history and walking may be just as important as a guided tour of the nearby Schloss Gündelhart estate. For several of the offerings, the season or advance booking is important; plan your visits accordingly.
Village History and Buildings
Hörhausen was first mentioned in a document in the 11th century, when its name appeared as “Huonerhusin.” In the oldest part of the village, old timber-framed buildings stand alongside newer ones. The village thus brings together buildings from different periods. Nearby in Gündelhart stands the parish church of St. Mauritius, a plastered church building with a transverse annex and a roof turret topped by an onion dome, dating from the 14th to the 18th century. Schloss Gündelhart was built in 1645, is legally protected and is classified as being of particular value.
Tours and Farm Offerings
At the Schloss Gündelhart estate, tours are available by prior arrangement or as part of a booked event. They offer insights into the farm’s history and the daily life of an organic farm, and include visits to the animals and stables. A tour lasts about 45 minutes and is limited to a maximum of 20 guests. At the farm shop on the same estate, you can collect meat and sweet cider directly from the farm by appointment.
The Hochstross farm shop operates on a self-service basis. It mainly offers naturally produced goods grown on the farm, as well as delicacies that are as natural as possible and gently processed; the selection may vary. Depending on the weather, you can pick around 70 different annual and perennial flowers and grasses yourself in the flower field from March to November.
The Frei farm shop is located in the middle of the village and opens seasonally during asparagus, strawberry and cherry season, as well as at Easter and during Advent. For specific visiting dates, it is advisable to check the current opening hours. Gubler Tree Nursery welcomes visitors at Unterdorfstrasse 5, 8507 Hörhausen. It offers advice and a wide range of trees in various sizes. As visiting arrangements may change, it is best to check in advance.
Walking and Landscape
There are three marked walking routes in the municipality of Homburg, ranging from 3.5 to 12.5 kilometres in length. One starts at the car park on Tägermoosstrasse in Hörhausen. Another begins at the Freihof bus stop in Hörhausen and is marked with red signs. The different route lengths give you a clear guide when choosing the distance of your walking loop. The Hörhausen circular walk offers views across the Untersee.
As a broader regional setting, the municipality of Homburg lies on the Thurgau Seerücken ridge between the Thur Valley to the south and the Untersee shore of Lake Constance to the north. Its elevations range from 485 to 723 metres above sea level; from there, you can enjoy wide-ranging views of the Alps. The combination of a historic village centre, seasonal farm offerings and marked walking routes can help you match Hörhausen to your interests before choosing a hotel for your stay.
