Sirnach: Pilgrimage History, Landscapes and a Neo-Gothic Church
Accommodation in Sirnach
Sirnach lies in the Murg Valley in Hinterthurgau, between the towns of Wil and Winterthur, and is considered the gateway to Tannzapfenland. As a political municipality and locality, Sirnach belongs to the Münchwilen district in the canton of Thurgau. The landscape, pilgrimage history, architecture and outdoor activities offer a range of ways to enjoy a stay.
Landscapes in the Murg Valley
Sirnach lies in gently rolling countryside, characterised by fields, forests and the Murg, the area's defining river. Walks, cycle rides and nature experiences offer different ways to spend your free time. If you want to spend time outdoors, you can make the landscape itself the focus rather than limiting your stay to a single attraction. Open fields, woodland and the river provide a scenic backdrop for different activities.
Pilgrimage Route and Local Tradition
The pilgrimage route passes through Sirnach on its way between Konstanz and Fischingen. The scallop shells on the municipality's coat of arms recall Sirnach's historical importance as a pilgrims' station and the customs of pilgrims. At the «Zum Engel» pilgrim hostel, pilgrims can have their pilgrim passports stamped with the seal of the Sirnach civic community; they are also treated to barley soup with Wiener sausages. Check in advance whether these services are available on the day of your visit. Together, the route, coat of arms and hostel represent different aspects of the pilgrimage tradition: the path between two places, local remembrance and a personal visitor experience.
History and Architecture
Sirnach was first mentioned in a document in 790. Its history is closely linked to the Diocese of Konstanz and Fischingen Abbey. A building from a later period is the Catholic Church of St. Remigius, built in the neo-Gothic style by Johann Joachim Brenner (1815–1886) in 1874. “Neo-Gothic” refers to the revival of Gothic forms in the 19th century and places the church in the context of the period in which it was built. The early historical references and the church show how different eras come together in Sirnach's history.
Outdoor Activities
The Sirnach Crime Trail is an outdoor mystery tour: participants visit various locations, solve a criminal case and identify the culprit. There is a version designed for children and a more challenging one for adults. The experience therefore varies by target audience and difficulty; formats may change. If you plan to take the trail, check the latest booking and availability information in advance. The new observation tower on the Hochwacht above Sirnach has been open to visitors since June 2026 and offers panoramic views. These provide a choice of outdoor activities: an interactive mystery and a lookout point.
