Thundorf lies at 550 metres above sea level in a high valley above Frauenfeld. To this day, the municipality between Wellenberg and Immenberg remains largely agricultural in character. The higher elevations of Wellenberg are considered less prone to fog. These features offer a first point of reference when choosing your destination: Thundorf combines an elevated location with a rural landscape.

Landscape and activities

The area around the municipality of Thundorf is well suited to hiking; the sweeping views from Immenberg attract hikers in summer. In winter, cross-country skiers visit the municipality. Another attraction is the Sonnenberg-Wellenberg panoramic trail. If you have a specific hike in mind, it is worth checking current trail conditions. The seasonal distinction is clear: hiking around Immenberg is associated with summer, and cross-country skiing with winter.

Getting there and finding a hotel

A postbus connects Thundorf with Frauenfeld railway station. Check the current timetable before travelling, as schedules may change. The Matzingen and Frauenfeld motorway exits are around five minutes from Thundorf; actual journey times may vary. These directions relate to different aspects of travel: the connection to the railway station on the one hand, and the two motorway exits on the other.

Culture and architectural history

The Stählibuck Tower is an observation tower and a 25-metre-high iron structure with 143 steps. It was built in 1908–1909 by Bosshard & Co. in Näfels. As a cultural asset, the tower is legally protected and classified as valuable. During the Thirty Years’ War, the Stählibuck hill served as a watch post. The hill’s earlier history and the later construction of the tower therefore belong to different periods.

The Reformed Church of St. Afra and St. Nicholas in Thundorf is listed as a Category B object in the Swiss Inventory of Cultural Property Protection. The medieval castle site of Wetzikon / Spiegelberg in Thundorf is also listed there as a Category B object. The church’s architectural history can be traced through several dates: the nave and polygonal choir date from 1484. The tower was built in 1519 and raised in 1702 with the addition of a bell chamber and a Käsbissen-style roof. The churchyard was laid out in 1695 and also includes a long, renovated stone staircase. The church is considered a landmark of Kirchberg and Thundorf; it was first mentioned in a document in 1275.

From Advent until New Year, the church is illuminated on weekends. The exact dates may vary. If you would like to plan your visit around this seasonal feature, check the dates in advance.

When making your choice, you can weigh the different attractions against one another: the landscape and seasonal activities appeal to travellers interested in hiking or cross-country skiing, while the tower, church and castle site offer a different focus for a stay centred on cultural history. Compare the specific features of each hotel based on its individual offering.
